Interesting topic!

I wish I could contribute something but my knowledge of Photographic history is limited.

It does seem noteworthy that many photographers have chosen 50mm as their favourite focal length.

sam abell - 28 and 90
DAH (pre-digital) - 28/2, 35/1.4, 50/1.4
Nachtwey - 16-35
moriyama - 28

Richard Avedon: 120mm Medical Nikkor (a highly corrected, extremely sharp macro lens with integral ring flash - designed for documenting surgery). Avedon used this lens for some of the portraits in In The American West.

Not that I'd really associate Avedon with this lens in the way I associate Cartier-Bresson with the 50, It's just such a strange tool for a creative photographer to pick up and use, and especially so for a portraitist.

Koudelka - for Gypsy 25 ... he is now 35/1.4

Nachtwey - Canon 16-35, 50, 35, 28 ... Leica 35

Doisneau - 75/80 on rollies

Depardon - 50

Jeanloup Sieff - 21 (large part), one of the first to combine 21 with fashion work and environmental portraiture

Beniliam (David) - 50

Todd Hanz - anything that works, which in his hands, is pretty much any focal length
