Several years ago I saw an ad in a photo mag for a hat simular to the Austrailian bush hat which was designed for photographers. At the time I still had plenty of hair on top of my head but now it's getting thin and prone to sunburn in the hot sunny Texas sky..
Anybody remember this hat and if so where can it be had??

don't recall seeing it but today i bought a panama hat at our local 'heritage festival' and it worked great at keeping my bald head cooler and protected from the sun.

I was out this afternoon shooting and came home with a blistered head even though I still have a few strands of hair up there.
Ball caps get in my way so I'll have to go find something this week maybe even a panama hat..

i normally use a ball cap and push the bill up when i put camera to eye.
with the panama hat the brim was so soft it just moved and then moved back when i took the camera away from my face.
it was very nice and saved a moment or 2 of time.
and my campanion for the day said i looked pretty suave too...

do your job, then let go
How about a straw skimmer? Keeps your head cool, the brim is small so it will not get in the way, and can be worn on the front or back of the head as needed.

This is the one.
I've bookmarked their site and will be ordering.

I think Herb Keppler, PoP Photo Mag., wears a Tilly. I'm still wondering what the RFF hat looks like.

Hmm...and some folks here were making fun of Tilleys a while back?kmack said:How about a straw skimmer? Keeps your head cool, the brim is small so it will not get in the way, and can be worn on the front or back of the head as needed.
Galfriend got a Tilley for a brief outdoor job she had a short time ago. Loves it, and has me thinking about one. Yep, the hype is real.

I've had a canvas Tilley hat for number of years.
Even though I have a patch of hair left on top, the sun on my head exhausts me more quickly than when I doff a hat. But then I rarely go without long sleeves and long pants either. A habit left over from my days working in an amusement park.
Lesser hats either shrink up or fall apart. I chose khaki as it doesn't show dirt like I've seen the lighter ones do.

'Khaki' is the Hindi word for dirt.

Yeah, Barrett, people were making fun of Tilley hats (and me ... I have two and would certainly consider another) ... seems that the stamp of approval from Keppler is some sort of magic.

I'd heard a lot about these hats from my Canadian friends so I was kind of shocked when first saw them, they scream Tourist !! Rube!! At least you could wear a skimmer while playing the banjo or singing in a barber shop quartet or attending a Cambridge/ Oxford boat race. I'll stick to my giant ten-gallon sombrero (a great lens shade) or my baseball cap, it's no sweat to turn the bill around when I shoot, but I what I really lust for is a good Panama.

No seriously, I bought a handmade panama in Merida, Yucatan about a thousand years ago. It was the perfect hat, fit like it was part of my head, stylish, cool and you could crush it into a bag or suitcase and it would come back to its old shape in a couple of hours, it went flying out the back of a jeep in baja and into never never land. Jeez I miss that hat.
