Photographer's Quotes-Which stand out for you?

Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.

and

There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. This kind of photography is realism. But realism is not enough - there has to be vision, and the two together can make a good photograph.

Actually, I’m not all that interested in the subject of photography. Once the picture is in the box, I’m not at all interested in what happens next. Hunters, after all, aren’t cooks.

That's an interesting site Todd. One that I used to visit every once in awhile.

I love that Gary Winogrand quote about only pictures when he's taking them. Almost a quantum physcial statement. I really like that quote website. In the vein of the Winogrand quote:

Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter. -Ansel Adams

And the one about 12 good pics a year. That does sound low, but I would have over a hundered winners by now, and I really don't!

I'm kind of partial to my own quotes though!

Okay, seriously -

There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment. -Robert Frank

(Quoted from memory, after seeing a film interview with HCB at the exhibition in Berlin, two days after his death, August 2004)

"Releasing the shutter in the decisive moment - how shall I explain... it's like an orgasm."

If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough. -Robert Capa

I hope to stay unemployed as a war photographer till the end of my life. -Robert Capa

The world is going to pieces and people like Adams and Weston are photographing rocks! -Henri Cartier-Bresson, during the 1930's

Though I am not always 100% into his photos, I think Ansel Adams was right on the money when he said: "There is nothing worse than a sharp photo of a fuzzy concept". The correlary is of course HCB's statement about sharpness being a bourgeois concept.

And here are some fuzzy legs to celebrate their quotes:
