Photographic shops in New YOrk

Hi,i'll go to NY next saturday and i'd like to go to second hand photography shops in NY, or street markets....
I know only BH.

On Saturday, all the interesting photo dealers in New York are closed, either because they are orthodox Jewish businesses that close from Friday evening through Saturday, or because they cater to professionals and close on weekends.

B&H is open on Sunday.

If you're in town through the week, a few to check out are Lens and Repro (expensive but interesting), Photo Gizzmo (great for large format but also has angood selection of smaller format items), and Fotocare.

There are a few camera dealers at flea markets around town, but I've never seen anything that interesting or any really great deals at the flea markets.

More importantly, take some time to visit the local galleries. I usually check what's on by picking up _The Village Voice_ and checking the photo listings. There are a few other sources as well, but most of the good shows are in the _Voice_.

I'd recommend Photo Habitat and Photo Village. Both are closed on Saturday though. Flea markets are a tough one as the largest, the one on 6th Avenue, is now high rise apartment buildings where the market used to flourish. Basically all are gone, as are the some camera bargains that used to be had. There are some small markets interspersed in small parking lots on West Canal Street near the post office or in the west 20's off of Broadway, near where the large market used to be. Mainly these are furniture and knick-knacks.

There is a flea market on Avenue A and 11th Street that you might want to check out, but very rarely are there cameras. Mostly furniture, clothing, and lots of "junk".

Anything decent is gonna be $$$$. All that is pricey here in NYC, plus shipping to Spain.

There really aren't any Oscar. Due to the rising real estate costs, most of the flea markets in NYC have disappeared or are no longer what they once were. The parking lots they were allowed to setup on weekends are now construction sites of large apartment buildings. To find furniture, it would be best to explore the area near Chelsea - 23rd to 28th streets between Broadway and 7th Avenue. Soho has very high priced antiques. ABC Carpet on Broadway and 19th has Asian and East Indian antique furniture.

There are plenty of street vendors, mostly in the East Village and below Houston Streets. It is kind of catch as can. Working around you never know what you will find. "Junk" - t shirts and such - the best place to walk around the East Village and the Lower East Side from 3rd Ave - the Bowery to Avenue D and below Houston to Delancey Streets.

Oscar, if you have time on a Saturday and/or a Sunday, and you are looking for retro furniture, vinyl records, turntables and t-shirts, you're best bet is to go over the George Washington Bridge (at 181st Street in Manhattan) or through the Holland Tunnel [near Canal Street] in Manhattan to New Jersey... When you get to New Jersey, you go to neighborhoods and you will find many, many signs to Garage Sales and you should see lots of what you want --and maybe a camera...

There used to be a shop on 7th ave and maybe by 20th or 21st that sold a lot of used music instruments and camera. (next to the BMW bar) Not sure if its even around anymore but that were really expensive. All the big name places are closed on saturdays. Beware of all the tourist trap places that sell cameras, tshirts, luggage and NYC crap. They are a big ripoff!

I remember that pawn shop well. It closed a few years ago.
