Photography's source image has to exist before the photographic image is recorded.

It can be a snap, post card, or something else. What happened in between is hopefully under some control of the person recording.

Photographing Art is an inclusive concept, how you assemble your image determines what people will think of your efforts and how much is yours.

Roger, for landscapes do not leave out the pagan photographers. ;-)

Yes, and I think this is Nathamp's concern - ''how much is yours''. The possibility of that entering into the equation may deter photographers from taking photos of artwork to produce artwork.

By the way, why are images from thumbnails so compressed on RFF? They didn't use to be sized this small and unsharp. Are there instructions somewhere to post the photos in the reply as opposed to attaching them?

I know what you mean, I had this frustration. I now use Image shack to host the images and generate a link to that. Even then I have to resize the photos first.

Thinking yet more about it...

One way of analyzing pictures is into record, graphic and narrative. A record shot of a statue might be under diffuse light; a graphic shot might be of only a part of the statue, perhaps strongly lit; and a narrative shot may use the statue as part of a larger story.

The three categories can overlap to varying degrees. For example, attached is a record/narrative shot of someone who was (presumably) trying to take a graphic shot (of a statue, to stay on topic!)
