The new Magnum book, Magnum Stories - have only flipped through it in a store but it's very high on my wish list now.

James Nachtwey: Inferno & Sebastiao Salgado: Workers: An archeology of the modern age - I don't think either of these needs much explanation!

Bruno Stevens: Bagdad - still the best photojournalism book on Iraq.

Photo icons from Taschen is a good one. I have the 25y anniversary thick edition, very entertaining.

ANyway...I see it is not mentioned yet: Slightly out of focus by Robert Capa is the best photography related book i've ever read. Also as literature it is very good IMO.

Taschen does a very good job with their photo books. I picked up a Brassai book recently and spent as much time marveling at the quality as I did the images. Very well done.

The most recent book i picked up and really enjoy is called
"Rough Beauty" by a photographer called Dave Anderson. Not the usual RF stuff but some work i am really enjoying ... verrry good work in my humble opinion!

I'm currently reading Photographers on Photography, Nathan Lyons, 1966. It's compiled essays on a variety of subjects by various photographers from 1899 to 1963. So far (just started) it's quite enjoyable.

Favorite books

I have a large amount of books, some useful, some entertaining, and some just taking up space on the shelf. In no particular order.

Edward Weston's daybooks- Not much on technique or examples, but it sure shows that life as a photographer isn't boring.

The usual Adam Ansel book's. It amazes me how he was able to produce so many wonderful images.

A couple Garry Wingrad books. Street photography at its best. Every time I go through his stuff I want to go out and shoot the street, but my nun incident has scarred me for life.

David Plowden. I have a soft spot for him as he lives in the next suburb over. His documentation of disappearing places should find a spot on your shelf.


One of my joys of having a good public library is grabbing a book off the shelf at random and discovering new photographers.
