Photokina 2014 a DUD ?

I love my GXR. Nobody else I know has one (or even knows what it is). Sliding out the lensor unit really raises some eyebrows.

An updated Leica M unit with high ISO capabilities would be so incredible.

this is what modern digital cameras should be, but the manufacturers are too scared to try doing it, as they know it will destroy their business model and they have no idea what to do/how to make money once everyone realizes it's how digital cameras should have been from the start (and now even moreso that the tech rat-race has plateaued).

leica digital SHOULD do this, but it would upend their M-mount business model more than anyone else's, and they're the one company who can't stand to have their business model fall apart. there's literally no point to putting 45 minutes into scrubbing an aluminum block when 4 years from now it's going to be an expensive paperweight.

you would think that even wealthy people would realize that it makes sense to put love & care into creating a beautiful camera body where every two-three years, you ship it off to Leica digital, pay them $1500 for a new sensor module and a $300 installation fee for them to make sure post-installation all the bits are "within-spec," and boom. honestly, don't even bother making it user-swappable (although that would be nice).

it's really not that hard a concept to grasp -- it's like comparing having a gold trash can that you throw out with the garbage, versus having a gold trash can you can open up, take the $.30 plastic bag out containing the garbage, and then throw that away. besides, if leica digital is so hell-bent on pimping their advertising (that was actually true in the film-camera days), they could use their old "OUR CAMERA*S LAST A LIFETIME" with only a tiny asterisk...

*bodie

if a company couldn't modify that business model to make it profitable, they're idiots. the problem isn't that they're stupid, it's that consumers are.

i thought there were more pluses than minuses. considering how attention has shifted to other photo shows recently, my expectations for photokina were surpassed.

Easy to grasp. Vastly harder than you imagine to implement well.

The BIG announcements were the Iphone 6 and 6+, IMO. That is where mainstream photography heads to... (not related to the Photokina, though...)

Having picked up an M 240, used, in mid-August, my wallet was super happy with this Photokina!

The most exciting announcement for me was the Summarits. Hoods now included. Closer min focusing distance for the 75mm and the 46mm threads. I know this might not do it for some, but having owned 3 of the first versions, I'm excited. Might even sell the 35mm FLE and get the Summarit. If the 75mm IQ comes close to that of my Summicron, that might go too. But would be a hard feat. Super impressed by that lens.

Overall, the Leica and M mount announcements were the best highlights of the whole show.

It was awesome to see a new film camera - and one that perfectly fits my way of shooting. I'm gonna do my best to buy an M-A in the near future. So funny to see how many people were upset that Leica added to their range of film cameras instead of discontinuing them - rattled the doomsayers' cages a bit. 😀

Let's face it. Photokina was a major flop with very little of interest. The major camera manufacturers are obviously scrambling about wildly trying to figure out how they can 'win back' picture-takers from the cellphone companies. The major bright spot for me was to see new products from Voigtlander. As long as they're alive and well, I shall be happy!...TW

implementation meaning the engineering aspect (unlikely) or the pricing aspect (more likely but still arguably not-all-that-difficult, given Leica's ability to coax massive dollars out of its customers wallets)?

Me too. And nothing GR- or GXR-like from Ricoh.🙁

This.

All the other stuff made me shrug. But something GXR-like but with a bigger sensor would have gotten my vote. I love my GXR too (especially in manual mode black&white!) but the lack of a relatively fast ~24mm wide angle for it saddens me.

People saying the Nikon Df was a disappointment: pls keep up the good work, you have my gratitude. I briefly shot one from a fellow working photographer in my home town and the sensor on that thing is remarkable, at least three stops faster than my beloved D700 before noise overcomes the image. That is a huge one in my book and I'm thanking those slagging the Df off and those thinking latest=greatest, because it'll make the price on the Df drop faster 🙄

Well Photokina 2014 is over,
....
Or did I miss exciting news?

It was amazing. The high amount of young people there shows photography has a very bright future. And their particular love for film is heartening.

Loads of interesting new cameras (LX100, GM5, D750, DP1Q, Leica X f:1.7 and S(cmos)) and lenses (Nikkor 20mm, Zeiss, Voigtländer). Super enticing high quality bags. Loads and loads of tripods, lighting systems etc. Capture One 8 being so much faster. The NX1 (although AF was very disappointing) showing Samsung's intentions. Finally a digital rangefinder without screen.

All that complemented by hundreds if not thousands of great photos. Best Photokina I have yet visited. If only the air was not so bad it would be perfect.

I realize now there's the difference (in appreciating the Photokina event) between the excitement of physically being there and the non-excitement of getting hardware announcements out of it, over the internet. This is especially true as most manufacturers announce new gear at any time they desire throughout the year.

I imagine it is a very exciting personal event if you can get there.

For us Nikon users - the D750 will be replacing the D610 and it was shown off at Photokina. Not a big, big, big development - but a new camera is a new camera.

And yes - that 20mm Nikkor looks to be of interest at under $800.

What is the best media outlet to get the summary of what is in Photokina?
English, please.

My picks for the best of the show : http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2468770,00.asp

I actually thought that there was more to cover this go-round than the last. I had two days on the show floor and struggled to see anything aside from the main booths. Pop had a few people there covering the show, and I'm glad that team was able to locate some of the more interesting accessories—even if one is a strap. 🙂

The LX100 was my pre-show pick for the star of the show, but that Android smartphone with a 1-inch sensor that Panasonic also announced could really be something for mobile photography. A prime-lens RX100 II in your pocket, essentially. Very quick to focus, which is an issue with the high-megapixel Nokia/Microsoft Lumia line (from my experience with a few of those models).

Out of interest, why not just buy a MP if you want a modern camera or a M2/M4 if you want meterless with 0.72 mag?

The only reason I moved on to a real Leica body was to get FF so that I had more wide angle options with a fast aperture. I would still be shooting with my GXR-M if it were FF.
