For anyone interested, PhotoKlassik Germany is trying to launch a high quality English language quarterly magazine devoted to film photography.

Yes, they attempted this a while back and the Kickstarter campaign fell woefully short. They have redesigned the campaign to make it more affordable to those who are always posting questions about what is the cheapest (fill in the blank) camera I can buy, but it is still more expensive than “free” so won’t appeal to those who are under the impression that all knowledge is available on the internet for nothing. So, not sure if even the modest Kickstarter goal here will be modest enough.
I pledged last time around, just posting the link here in case anyone else might be interested in film photography.:)

The little voice inside tells me that the fact there were zero responses to this thread is a more accurate reflection of the precarious state of film photography in today’s world than I might wish to imagine. But, such is life. Perhaps film photography is alive and well and growing daily, or perhaps it’s dead as a mackerel, I don’t pretend to know. Or, perhaps it’s only dead here.
Can’t say I am trying to revive interest in this thread given that there wasn’t any to begin with, but, sensing a dead horse that needs a good thrashing, will post a copy of what I posted over at APUG this morning:

I backed the Kickstarter campaign, last one as well. Samples from the first issue shown on the campaign page look very promising for worthwhile content. There is a void out there for a print magazine devoted to film photography; I’m not one of those (bless your hearts) who thinks people posting random ideas and bits of advice on the internet supplies humanity’s every need. Film photography is always going to be a niche in the current world, but it would be nicer for everyone associated with it if it were a bigger niche, and that’s going to require the kind of cultural infrastructure inhabited by things like decent print magazines. Print magazines in general are, yes, facing a decline in sales due to the inroads and challenges posted by the internet, but a subject like photography would seem to call out for the vehicle of a print magazine more than the “news” does. The Print, and all that. If things like mountain biking can support numerous print magazines, it seems perverse to think that film photography doesn’t warrant something like this. Perhaps even need something like this.
To those behind PhotoKlassik: I wish you all the best.

Best wishes:)

I saw this yesterday, got quite excited about it and thought about starting a thread here - and then discovered that they'd tried to get this going last year, so was a bit confused as to what was going on, especially as they appear to be using the original video to promote it.

Having said that though, it doesn't take a lot to confuse me, and I'm not really 'up' on kickstarter campaigns and all this sort of stuff.

I'd be interested in the magazine though, and the annual subscription seems to be very reasonable for something that looks to be of high quality.

The original campaign needed to raise vastly more money than this one does, something like $30,000 or more if I remember correctly (and I possibly don't, but it was much more than this one.) After they failed to achieve what was a very optimistic goal they said they would try to rethink it and see if they could get the magazine off the ground some other way.

Dear Larry,

Yes, I backed it too. And I think I'll back this one too. I just hadn't seen your post until a moment ago. Thanks for the link.

EDIT: Just backed it for a year's subscription: 4 issues.

Cheers,

R.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

When I saw it yesterday, I did think some of the contributors here might be interested and / or possibly involved with it in some way - either now or in the future. Names that immediately sprung to mind:

SimonSawSunlight
Chris Crawford
Roger Hicks
Helen Hill

I'm backing it for the second time too. In the meantime I have bought almost all back issues of the German publication and I think it's really good. Hope enough people joins up this time.

I'm genuinely surprised that there hasn't been more interest in this too - particularly when we have at least one member here who has work in it.

I would have thought that any efforts to get a new 'physical paper' magazine devoted to the art of photography (regardless of whether it be film or digital), would have been roundly commended by those on here - regardless of whether they shoot film or digital.
