My friend Joe, gave me permission to use some of his photos. He was a combat photographer with the US 1st Cavalry Division from 1950-1970. His photos have been in Life, stars and stripes, Army Times and various newspapers and local publications. Joe was originally from New Jersey but went to boot camp at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He met a girl from here and married her after the Korean war. They were stationed all over the US and Germany. After his retirement they moved back here and Joe worked for a Shreveport newspaper for 3 years before opening his own studio. He has also given me some copies of his Viet nam photos also. He is currently writing a book about his life in the Army.
here is the link to the photos

Wow!

"Comfort" has been published. I think I saw it in Life Magazine as well as several history books.

He said he never got credit for a lot of them as the Army gave them out for publication. It just said Army Public Affairs, still camera division. Mosyt of the photos he took still belong to the Army. He never had a personal camera then.. Only when he went to germany, in '56 did he buy a Zeiss folder of his own. Then he had a Canon when in Japan in '60 as he said the Leica's were to expensive for an enlisted man.

The press core photo and the one of the peace treaty signing were from newspaper clippings. He said he never saw it till '55,
The US military personell could not wear uniforms for the signing, just khaki's
A funny story about the press cor ephoto was that htey ran it as Joe Karr(Carr) in the papers. That is his middle name and they thought a Jewish name might not be APPROPRIATE. His mother was a gentile and her maiden name was Carr

"Comfort" is a pretty powerful image. Thanks for posting this.

It's nice to see these old images. I used to be a 1st Cav trooper some time ago (although not quite so long ago that I might have run into Mr. Leiberman).

As for the credit thing I can sympathize - I'm a contract photojournalist for the Army.
