Drift Creek Bridge, Lincoln County Oregon

Normally the Oregon coast is cool and cloudy during July. The valley heats up and the marine layer is drawn inland for a couple of miles. Late spring and early summer has brought lower average temperatures leading to some spectacularly clear days at the coast.

There is a bit of a story behind this simple photo. On another camera specific site there is a photo of the same bridge. The photographer arrived early, waited for just the right light, probably shot a card full, came home, edited, stacked and Photoshopped. It's a very nice photograph. This one on the other hand, my wife and I had been stuck in the house for months with the big excitement of going for groceries. We decided to drive to the beach, packed a lunch and tossed the Nikkormat and a Sekonic 308x in the car. Just east of Lincoln City is a turn off for the bridge and we said, "Why not." It was the middle of the afternoon with the sun being high and only harsh shadows. I wandered around for about ten minutes, took about six photos, this being one of them. The main reason Rangefinder Forum is one of the best photography sites is because of the minimal use of manipulation to present a photo to the group. We all know there is manipulation, from burning and dodging to moving sliders around but keeping close to the original. Thanks for the honest photos.

Wow, this is a brilliant portrait Erik. The light, the expression on the lady's gaze. I always wonder when I see portraits like these taken a long time ago, what are those people doing now.

Thank you, Pan.

This is a completely forgotten shot. I was looking for something else, but there she was. Happy moment! I even forgot her name. I call her now "Maria" because of the gaze. And she has something Rafaëlesque. She was in another class, I think (because of the ring) she was with the goldsmiths. Maybe she is a retired goldsmith now.

When I took the shot, I was seventeen.

Erik.
