Just a heads up there's an article on www.telegraph.co.uk today featuring very early photos using a variety of nascent photographic technologies.
The quality is surprising.

The photo by John Thomson is very good.
But this one has always puzzled me, which one of these two gentlemen was Cast Iron Billy ?
I always thought it was the short gent with the bowler hat.
Any guesses?

I think Cast Iron Billy is the gentleman to the left.

Yes, but since he had been let go as an omnibus driver some time before, he should be the one without the horse whip.

Going by the whip and somewhat ancient and shabby dress, he is more likely to be the one to the left...
