Photos of the Vietnam War: Rediscovered.

Thanks a bunch for the links. Some of the best Nam's photos I've ever seen.
This is why I love film; who knows how many amazing pictures about historical things will be in a cellar waiting for someone to re-discover them! (i.e. Cappa's Mexican Suitcase, Vivian Maier's undeveloped negatives, and many other anonymous documents!).

Thank you, and thanks again for posting these. I remember that I have a roll or two from Vietnam given to me by a friend before he passed away. I've never scanned them, but maybe now...

Thanks for sharing. Makes me even more desirous of getting out my recently rediscovered photos from my time in the Vietnam war.

It makes me sad how many lives were lost on both sides and how much $$ was spent.....for zilch. I thank God I didn't have to go there. I was an honest 1-Y(physical disability).

Look at this photo. It looks like a Minolta SR-1. What did he put on his lens?

I have some theories but I'm curious whether anyone has a definitive answer. (non-guess)

It may be a home made "neutral density" filter. It's very bright sunlight in Vietnam and maybe he was trying to reduce the amount of light entering the lens. Or he was trying to achieve some sort of "special effect" like exaggerated vignetting.

Or final guess, maybe he wanted to stick the lens up against a gunsight, like a telescopic sniper scope. That would let him get some interesting shots.

If it was a lens protection device, there would be no reason to leave a hole in front.

Is that a hole in front though? Looks to be a taped up beer can possibly. That may be some piece of adhesive over the center where the folds terminated.

Great pictures and thank you for posting these. We must remember that countries go to war for many reasons, reasons that may later be discovered to be in some ways unfounded, but at the time were real enough to provoke action. But regardless, the men and women who left the Safety of their families and homes to defend liberty for everyone else, must never be forgotten or their service diminished in any way.

God bless them.

And wow, how important is the photographer in this world. To record, to capture moments that would otherwise be lost in time. Simply amazing.

I would think it is a lens cover, most likely home made, to add protection to the lens when traveling. Not sure if that is a hole and a lens cover is in view or if it is a solid round piece of solid material providing shape to the end of the cover.

Perhaps if someone makes it to the reception on Friday night and has a chance to speak with Charlie and we may be able to get a definitive answer.
