Photos with the 28/3.5 CV

Managed to get out for a short walk today, so here are a few picture. Used the CV 28/3.5 at around f5.6-8.

Nothing very striking about this lens - it seems sharp enough, but not outstanding, shows considerable vignetting (none of these shots have been corrected), but is is nice and small to carry around. It's surprisingly heavy and solidly built, so it's satisfying to handle. Optically it reminds me of the CV 21/4, and is rather prone to flare when shooting into the light. I have a custom shade for it, bit it negates the advantage of the compact design...

I really like the first shot and didn't read your disclaimer until after I looked and thought....nice shot, nice light. Never occured to me to look for vignetting. I like the lens on my iiia just because it is a good fit.

Like them all, espcially the detail from Kentish Town baths (must go back and try shooting that again with my recently acquired R-D1).

Was this with film or R-D1? If second, vignetting is mostly caused by the sensor. But some vignetting is an issue with other hoods used than the small round original hood, or with filters used. Being that flare prone, you may even use it hoodless. IMO this lens is very sharp. Have a look here - uncropped and unedited consumer lab scan out of a 400cn film.

Thanks, Louis, and Deed - I think you're right. I did a comparison with the CV28/1.9 and the 3.5 is just about as sharp as far as I can tell.

the vignetting is definitely sensor related; I'm sort of expecting that I'll end up with an M8 or its successor one day, so I'm not too concerned about it! But, yes, your pic is very impressive 🙂

I'll probably keep this lens on the camera for a while for casual b/w stuff - process through EPR and use the built-in b/w conversion and vignetting correction - it seems to work well that way; not so punchy in C1-LE. Meanwhile, I'm carrying the camera about more, now I've got a smaller kit 🙂 🙂

For such an outfit I have a LowePro Nova Micro AW. Quite versatile and can take even a lens or two more if really needed. The only inconvenient is, my wife always steals it as her tiny handbag! 😉
