Can someone give me an idea of what the size of a Canon 50/1.4 ltm is relative to a new VC 50/1.5 nokton? I understand the Canon is bigger than the Nikon 1.4
Anyone have a photo of it sitting on their camera?
Thanks very much.

Hi,
I will post a pic when I get home tonight. The Canon is much smaller than the Nokton.

I don't have the Nokton but I've "seen" it and I concur with Kim's statement.
Personally, now that I've seen the bokeh off of the 1.4 wide open; I'm very impressed with this older lens.

I bet when we see the pictures it will seem 1/2 the size of the Nokton.

That's why my Nokton went!
Try this out for size: page down to my Leica IIIf being spoiled by six 50's.

Whoa.
I didn't realize the 1.5 was so small with respect to the size of the 1.4 etc.
Now, where do I get myself one of those?

A lousy phone pic of the Canon 50/1.4. It is 54mm in diameter and 43mm long without hood, 64mm with hood. The Nokton is 54.5mm with hood according to the catalogue.

Thanks gentlemen!
Kim, what is the biggest difference based on your shooting experience between the signature of the 1.5 versus the 1.4? I understand the 1.5 is a sonnar design and the 1.4 is a planar? Any discernible differences in practical real life shooting?
Thank you

Give me an hour or so and I will scan some slides that I did to compare some 50's

Here are some samples of the Canon 50/1.4 (perfect glass) compared with a Nikkor 5cm/1.4 and Jupiter-3 50/1.5.
It is interesting that most people thought the Canon 50/1.4 was the J-3.

Brian,
Oddly enough I could not distinguish between the Nikkor and the Jupiter, which probably makes sense as both are sonnar designs. The Canon seems to have a much different color rendition.

That is my take as well. With the Canon, a Planar, you can tell the difference. I think the final shot in color was some underexposure, as it was the last lens tested and was getting later in the day.

Hi Again,
As promised some test shots. These are from a series of test shots I ran on some 50's. The VI-L was set up on a tripod and the whole series was shot in about an hour. It was a very dank miserable day but it was the only chance I was going to get to get all the lenses together. I did 3 shots on each lens. Wide open, 1 stop closed and F4. These are all the F4 shots. Taken on Fuji Sensia100 and scanned at 2700 dpi on a Coolscan 3 with the ICE on. Saved as TIFF and then these reduced to 1280 pixels wide and saved as JPG (upload size) with no manipulation.
From left to right, Canon 1.4, Canon 1.5, Nokton and J3. The most most noticeable thing is the very warm colour rendition of the Canon 1.5 and the much cooler effect from the 1.4.

Kim,
thanks for those shots ... the difference at F4 are smaller than I expected. The color differences are most interesting.
Could I trouble you to post the wide-open shots at your convenience? Thanks
