what a difference!

i was ready to give up on the 35/1.4 after my first roll shot.
3/4s of the photos were not in focus.
i thought maybe the lens was faulty or maybe i was faulty and no longer able to focus a fast lens.

second roll was shot in the zeiss ikon and i was happily surprised with the results. i tried to shoot mostly at 1.4 and i am pleased to say that all were in focus.

some results to show...

wow... very high contrast... did you adjust for contrast in post? 'bokeh' isn't pleasing to my eye (at least on my screen), a result of the bump in contrast perhaps?

i'm curious about your comment re. the contrast.

i assume you think the contrast is too high?
i'd like to hear more.
most of the time i do up the contrast to where i like the look of the scene and i know that i'm adding more than i used to...but it looks too grey otherwise.

Contrast is dependent on the individual viewing the images imho - ya they're contrasty but I don't think they're 'over the top' contrasty.

I know when I scan film that I always scan the image to attain an extremely low contrast (or as low as possible) across the image because I know I can "bump it up" in photoshop when I'm removing things like dust or crap off of the neg.

Usually....I just bump up the mid range with a general "defog" action in photoshop. Helps the images pop a bit but not overly so.

I think I'm going to have to get me that lens. . . .

i raised the question because on my screen the blacks look blocked out and artificially so... but that may very well be calibration issues with the screen... i was only wondering out loud if the contrast had been adjusted.. in my experience, VC lenses tend to be more contrasty that I like, especially under direct sunlight or even flourescent lights... i thought that the faster VC lenses might exhibit less contrast and better tonal range when shot wide open, but then again it's really difficult to judge these things through small jpegs viewed over the web... thanks for posting though...

i'm thinking that it might be a keeper dave. i found my focusing accuracy much improved when using the zi.
it might be a good combo if i get the slower zm 35, fast & slow, though i haven't decided on that part yet.

I use the 35 f/1.4 with my zeiss ikon, and I get consistent results! nothing wrong with the combo, and it is always focused if some user error isn't introduced *shrug*

my favourite combo now 🙂

I´m pleased with your results, too. I like them.

So the problem is the effective base length of the R4A. It´s too short for using the lens wide open. What a pity. I have to use glasses and can´t see the 35mm frame with higher magnification. Thanks for trying this, Joe. I will have a look at focus accuracy with my R2M at 1.4 - never tried it before.

i'm not saying that it can't be done on the r4a, just that i can't do it, though i will try again sometime.
