Planning: Oz, New Zealand, and elsewhere down there :)

The plan is to get to Sydney, Cairns and then to Perth (to visit a friend of mine, her husband and baby) sometime at the end of October through mid/late November of this year.

I'd like to hear from all you crazy Australians regarding where to stay (medium priced hotels in Sydney and Cairns please - I'll be couch surfing in Perth) and what to see.

and I hope that I can scare up enough info to make the trip easy going and happy-go-lucky.

I also have some plans to stop somewhere else on the way back home - but where?? - suggestions are welcome - I've heard about Bali, Fiji, the Seychelles and New Zealand.
