pleasant camera packing decisions

... for a weekend motorcycle trip to visit my parents. (6 hours each way)

My Domke 803 satchel bag just fits into my motorcycle tank bag.
I could take:

a) 2 Nikon F3's with 20, 28, and 50mm lenses,

b) Olympus OM4 and OM2 with 28 and 50, (sadly no 21)

c) rangefinders: M2/HRF/CL with 21, 28, 50,

or a combo

No 120 film at the moment, so no MF gear.

It's a very pleasant exercise.
 
Everytime I pack for a roadtrip, I enjoy the process almost as the roadtrip itself!😛

Now, when packing for a motorcycle roadtrip, it just doesn't get any more fun. Decide what to take; where to stash it; re-decide; re-stash, do it all over again tomorrow after picking up something I forgot; re-organize again...🙂

All the while anticipating the trip!

I'd take the OMs - makes it simple and small!
I love road trips, moving down to Melbourne from Brisbane was a 22 hour drive in my packed up little suzuki 4wd and I enjoyed every minute of it. Must be even better on a bike!

Gavin, I will take the OM gear. I found them already loaded with film while the Nikons were empty. Also a Rollei P+S AFM35, all with bulk rolled HP5+, and a digi P+S to take pics to share with you guys easily.

Dear Dave,

Shows how we're all different. I seldom agonize any more about what I pack on a motorcycle: just not enough space.

The bag is a tiny Billingham, with the floor area eqal to the size of an M. The backup body goes in the bottom in a chamois leather bag; then one or two (rarely three) small lenses, again in chamois bags; then the other M with a lens on, often protruding slightly from the top of the bag, which doesn't zip quite fully. Lenses are normally chosen from 35-50-75, sometimes +15. Frances carries a body or two, chosen from R2 (favourite for size) or MP plus an M2 for backup, and one, two or (rarely) three lenses: always 50, often 21 or 18, sometimes 90.

This goes into a tank bag with a thick (2" or so) foam floor to insulate from vibration. Between June 1st and July 11th I put 5970 miles on my 1978 R100RS: I have pictures of Frances wading in both the Baltic (June 8th) and the Mediterranean (July 3rd).

Next best thing to an R100RS...

In California I had an R90/s but the previous owner (an aircraft mechanic) had turned it into a café racer: no 'bubble', clip-ons, lightened flywheel, lightweight pushrods, gas flowed, usw., but not rear-sets. The bum-stop seat was (mercifully) interchangeable with a normal one, which looked pretty weird with clip-ons. He'd also done a disgusting paint job: baby blue frame with metal-flake grey-to-blue graded tank. But I bought it cheap; ran it for 5 years, with no more expense than servicing and tyres; and sold it for only $500 less than I paid for it.

Well, stop and think about it.

Leica got it right with the M3

BMW got it right with the boxers...

Probably quite a high proportion of Land Rover Series/Defender drivers too. And 501 wearers. And Weber barbecue cooks. And users of (Wenger or Victorinox) Swiss Army knives, or Leathermans (Leathermen?). And Snap-On or Craftsman tools (older members probably use King Dick, too). There's a certain mentality that's attracted to classics that work and go on working, to the extent that they stay in production for decades, with only incremental changes.

Heh, heh... Leicas v. other cameras. BMW motorcycles v. other motorcycles. Yep. There is definitely something in the DNA!

Having sold my K1200LT, I wish I could find/afford a nice airhead. But, then, again I could by an MP for less money. Arrgghh...

You are right there...
A defender probably be the first vehicle I would buy if I was still in England.
Favourite motorbike is the triumph thruxton, but several bmws are equal second on my list.

My wife refers to this mentality, which I believe I share, as fear of fashion, aversion to change, self-indulgent nostalgia, and the curmudgeon's closet. Resolutely so, am I.

Dear Mike,

Well, my wife's a classic that can't be improved upon. Perhaps you should suggest to your wife that this is not always an undesirable viewpoint. Or would she prefer that you traded her in on a newer model?

Wonder how many of us tend to stick with our wives/SO's like we do with other "classics"? Some kind of correlation there?:angel:
