Please ... can we limit the daily gallery upload to something sensible?

Another observation, has anyone ever suggested that, this being RANGEFNDER forum, we place a limit on how many threads we have about mirrorless digicams, micro 4/3rds, bags, predictions about the next generation this or that, complaints about what some manufacturer did or didn't do, etc??? If the site is intended to be about photography and not just the stuff, why would we want limits on images?

Why not have something for everyone?

When I see a thread about DSLRs, I skip it because it's not my personal interest. Although, I can't see how a DSLR is a topic for a rangefinder-centric website, I see absolutely no need to limit the interest of others in posting or reading such threads. My own lack of interest should not stymie someone else's intense interest.
 
I just went back into the gallery and finally figured out that clicking on the member's name under the photo (after you click on the thumbnail to get to the photo) will bring up thumbnails of all the photos by this one member. I have looked for this feature in the toolbar on top, and never found it until just now. 😛

So . . . I don't care if a limit is imposed or not, now that I can simply browse the pictures of whatever member I want to. This means I can bypass sorting through the daily gallery and get into individual member galleries.

That's fine with me.
 
I agree with Keith's concern. I'd like to add a related thought. When I want to sell something in the classifieds, I'll download the requisite 5 to 7 images of the gear to my gallery; then move them to the ad. I don't really want those kind of images to be cluttering up the site gallery. Is there a way to import gear images to my gallery but bypassing the site gallery?

I agree with Keith. Sometimes, less is more.
 
More is less.
Less is more.


It forces you to be more selective.
Every week, weed out some of the posted images.
Every month, weed out even more images.
 
@Blaz: your thought about starting an Own Thread has at least one precedent in Chris Crawford's "Some new photos from Fort Wayne." Not a bad precedent! That's how I use Tumblr (also b/c I'm lethargic about my eponymous website). But I value the peer review here, and see this as an opportunity to tougher with my selections, and more responsive to those same peers.

Self-regulation, with occasional enthusiastic outbursts, seems to be a compromise that folks here are good for. Those of us who are monkey-minded may very well see and do in accordance with the example of the best self-regulators. Rob's passionate and eloquent advocacy of non-imposed limits is persuasive, and I'm glad he took the time to think that through for us.

A few weeks ago the Dalai Lama opined (preached?) that the 21st century should be the time when we replace conflict with dialogue. Good work on that here. Thanks
 
I still think that if a member of RFF has a significantly sized themed collection of photos the most appropriate place is a thread of their own and not the Gallery. In doing this the poster has the opportunity and space to set the scene, give a full description, and add to the collection as the theme develops, so keeping all that 'work' in one easily accessed place. Reaction, comment and suggestions are also all collected into that thread. And by using a thread for signifiicant themes rather than the Gallery, the 'size' of the pictures will be less restricted and so give the viewer better quality.
I see the Gallery as a place for individual pictures to be viewed on their individual merit rather than as part of a collection.
But then I've probably got it all wrong, I usually have. LOL

Having been away from the computer for a day or so I've been reading back through this thread and I have to say there has been plenty of worthy comments and ideas and the fact that a thread about the gallery has attracted so much input is healthy in itself IMO.

A one a day limit is completely unrealistic because many members here, myself included, will often create a series based on a particular theme. I used to do this regularly and I generally worked towards a set of five based on the gallery upload limit and it forced me to edit from a larger body of work and really made me think about how I was going to represent my theme within this limitation. If ever I'm lucky enough to actually have an exhibition my process will be the same ... learning to selectively edit your work is as important as taking the actual images.

I'm quite prepared to stick my neck out with my opinions about the gallery because I've done it before, so I'm happy to stand by my opinion that allowing a bulk upload of twenty five images at once is counter productive. If nothing comes from this fine ... we can carry on as we are but personally I'll be working within set limitations for my own benefits.
 
In my time at RFF I've gone from a regular gallery poster (filling his 5 a day limit pretty much) down to a very irregular poster, perhaps one a month or less. Part of this is improving my editing skills (or in plain English, hiding the crap,) partly feeling a need to take a hiatus from the gallery every so often and another small part in just finding the time for personal photos. However, I must admit recently I too have been put off spending much time looking through the gallery when there are so many images being uploaded by the same photographer, of virtually the same thing at almost the same instant.

I would agree that one a day is far too few and may actually endanger the existence of the gallery itself, if this is the kind of number you want I suggest self control is the way to do it.

On the topic of images as a series. I've posted several series before and while I find it interesting to view images in this way and would like some of mine to be viewed as such, I don't believe, like Jesse, that RFF is actually the best platform to try this. Not that you can't or shouldn't, simply that if you go beyond a small series ( the five Keith mentioned above would seem a sensible limit as they'd all have sat within one or two lines of each other in the old gallery format) they can become lost, fractured and diluted. Whilst you can put them in an album within your gallery I'd love to know how many people, honestly, spend much time going through the galleries of other members compared to the time spent simply within the gallery itself?

Keeping the gallery flourishing has been a near constant issue in one manner or another since I became a member and probably way before. Whilst opinion will always differ I too wonder if too large a limit, or no limit at all, will be as much a danger as allowing all members only one upload per day.

Keith, this is an excellent discussion and no energy was wasted.
I do hope that posters start self-regulating / editing what they post in the gallery,
and I learned how to view images by specific members, which helps me enormously.

Keith, this was absolutely not a waste of energy. I think you raise a worthy topic for all of us to consider. Don't take the passion of my response as anything but respectful disagreement put out there with love for the site and the many people here who I hope I can count as friends.

Maybe the simple exercise of having this conversation will impel some of us to be more respectful of the privilige that having the gallery affords us and therefore be less likely to abuse it by dumping, as Simon says, our crap there.

So, Keith, do not ever become shy about sharing opinions here.
 
I agree that no energy has been wasted and a very worthy topic was put out for discussion and lots of members opened up with their views. I try to limit my postings to groups of 4 or 5 maybe twice or three times a week. I also feel obligated to spend some time to look thru all the posted images and add constructive comments where I feel I have something worthwhile to say. I don't comment on a lot of images because I may not understand that style of photography. I like fewer limits because I remember a picture site that required you to make comments for the privilege of posting images.

I would really like to hear from Stephen about his vision for this site. I think we have to respect his reasons, for after all without him there would be no RFF.

Tues (when the tech guy gets back from the holiday),

the upload limit will be changed to 5 pics within 24 hours.

We will also look into expanding the random pic selection on the home page.
