Please help me choose a photo for a competition.

Unable to decide between #2 and #3.

#2 because of the overall look in the image.
#3 that cloud over on the right top - cannot decide if it is irritating or balances the image.

Ok, I am going to go with #2. That cloud on the top bothers me in #3, as my eye keeps going to that. #2 is good because the person is looking into the horizon.

#2 - crop the tail light, burn a bit of the sky from the top. Lighten the area near his coat. It seems like DMax on my screen, but there should be some detail on the negative?

I prefer the darker car, and more light on the person. The composition seems more natural, the other two seem a bit forced. This one is more subtle. In #2 and #3, the shadow of the tall grass on the right constrains the perspective, while in #1 it is lighter, and helps give a sense of the openness of the landscape. The highlight and reflections on the back of the car in #2 and #3 are distracting.
 
All things considered I have to say #2. I really like #3 but the shadows bug me. They are better in#2. Good luck,

#2 ... without reading any of the other comments ...
I like the subtle cloud that leads your eye in the direction of his gaze ... also the way he is leaning against the mirror ,the space at the bottom of the frame where the tire and ground meet , the profile of the mans Jacket , the reflection on the side of the truck plays off the mountains in the distance,the foot is right at the edge of the tire track... all these subtleties play off each other making this image the most interesting of the three ...

These are the details that hit me straight a way without much thought ...

No. 2, crop from left (pic is about the big space, not a big truck) and crop maybe a bit of sky or foreground to maintain ratio; increase contrast to give the shadows - and the distance - more depth.
You could do the same for No. 3, which would make the cloud pop a bit.
The posture of the fellow in No. 1 makes him look like he is posing as a poseur ...

I hadn't thought of that aspect ... but it looks like I am giving the image away effectively!

edit ... and I meant to add:

If I crop (2) or (3) to remove the tyre as suggested by some I'll be losing half of the negative as that three to two ratio is a requirement of the competition!

But the fame and glory...

But FSA photographers essentially gave away their work as they worked for the government. Authur Rothstein, Theo Jung, Ben Shahn, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Carl Mydans, Russell Lee, Marion Post Walcott, Jack Delano, John Vachon, and John Collier.
 
#1 for me. It's not perfect -- I wish the shadow of the truck were less prominent, and that there was a bit more interest in the sky. But what really makes this one better is that the light falls on the land, and both that and the nice posture of the man lead the eye down the road.

In both #2 and #3, the land is in shadow, and the truck becomes the main subject. If the nameplate were visible I'd expect it to be a print ad for the vehicle. Of these two, I prefer #3 -- the man's recline against the car looks more natural, and the sky is better, though I think the crop makes it look like I was shot from too low an angle.

Number 2 strikes me as the best Keith. The ute is like a big graphic arrowhead pointing down the road in shots 2 & 3. The perspective on you and the ute just seems a bit more compelling in #2. The clouds in #3 add a little extra interest but I think they actually distract from the view down the road. Good luck Keith!
 
Well I'm glad to see there are at least 4 others preferring #1, as that is the clearly preferable one for me, for some of the same reasons mentioned. I like the shadowed truck, setting it as a less prominent element but at the same time a dark counterweight to the light landscape. I prefer the roadside grasses to be light as in #1. There is somehow more of a draw to the eye to follow that long empty road. The truck is too far to the right in the road in #2 & 3. Number 1 be the one! 🙂
