Please help me choose lens for first M8.2

Any vote for VC 40+15? Seems no one like this combination.

I vote heartily for the 40, if you can live without having dedicated frame lines for what will likely be one of your most-used focal lengths. I love it.

I'll readily admit that I'm not a wide-angle fan, and while I do own the 15mm SW Heliar, it feels like a niche lens in my outfit. I know others use it as their go-to normal lens (Mr. Kaplan please stand up and take a bow!), but I think a 21mm lens would be a better choice in a two-lens outfit.

I don't know much about the differences between M8 and M8.2, but if you, instead, buy M8, you can probably spend the difference for another lens or two...

There's no point in buying M8.2 on a tight budget, but for the lens I'd choose the 40mm if it's 80% portraits that you do, but then again, I don't know anything about these lenses, except that a FOV is a FOV.

~~ According to fellow RFF-er Maddoc, Tommy Oshima shoots a Noctilux on the Hexar RF, if there were any truth in the story he'd have trouble with that combo. I put no faith in the film curvature story either, film does not curve differently when a Leica lens is mounted.

Tommy Oshima used to use this combo very successfully (until it got stolen ... 🙁) and I had no problems with the Noctilux / Hexar RF either. It might be (in my case, can't speak about Tommy's former Hexar RF), that my Hexar RF had been adjusted by the previous owner (there is a shim under the baynet mount as I remember) to focus properly with Leitz / Leica glass.

I just recently added a 50mm Hexanon f/2.0 in favor of a 50mm Summicron-M and it is a great lens. No problems with focus at all on both of my film M Leicas (M4-P / M7). Now thinking about getting that 28mm M-Hexanon, too. 😀

Only yesterday evening (well, my time zone that is...) I saw an ad in the classifieds offering both an M-Hexanon 28mm and a 90mm. You might wanna check it out, see if it fits you!? Would be nice to fix up the OP with the 90mm, Maddoc with the 28mm and have the seller content at the same time, right?🙂

Frankly it took me 10 minutes to work with file to remove extra length of mount petal dedicated to frames trigger. So 40/1.4 now puts 35mm frame on all M-cameras and I specially tested Nokton with borrowed M8 - everything works fine in terms of correct framing.

I agree that the M8s "35mm" frame lines work quite well with the 40, except at closest focusing distances where one really must account for the narrower field of view. That's one of the reasons I've chosen to keep the original set of frames on my camera.

Of course, not everyone agrees with you and I.

Maddoc, I apologize, I misphrased.

Meant to say it would be sad for anyone to have their Hexar&Nocti stolen! Guessing Tommy recorded the serial number, sooner or later it will turn up I guess, unless the thief actually wants to shoot it himself... Tommy's work on Flickr is what got me into low light and the M5, now shooting an M-Hex 50mm f1.2 on the M5, I love it. Feel free to relate this to him, if you meet him.

Drop Ampguy a line, he's participating in Raid's Summer 2009 lens tests as well, where all contributors have their lens shipped back to them from the US, so he's probably well informed on the risks of international shipping and might make an exception, once he realises which respected RFF member is putting in the request!?
