A case for #2 and #6

A case for #2 and #6

I did include #2 and #6 in the list of Finalists as I felt they looked very close to what a film photo would have looked like, #2 like slide film, and #6 like Portra or similar.

Until I read this post I thought it was just me. No offense to anyone, but all of the images except perhaps for 3 and 5, look over processed.

Image 3 is my pick. 5 looks natural but has too much harsh light.
 
I voted for #1 because the hue and contrast match the cold winter day best in my opinion. Would have been better if the photographer had waited a few minutes for the sun to come our and illuminated the valley.
 
We have a tie between #1 and #4 ! Let me figure out if and how to break it, and follow up tonight with a conclusion. Thank you all for participating in this !

The Winners

First, let me summarize who the finalists were:

1) 02Pilot
2) Astro8
3) Ginner

And the winner is .... well, due to tie, and the work that you all put in, I decided we have two winners:

A) 02Pilot / Andreij will receive the 8.5cm/2 Nikkor LTM
B) Lynn will receive the CLE 40/2 Rokkor.

I learned a lot and I thank all participants for that. Post-processing is clearly subjective, and the outcome somehow personal. Some of the lessons:

- I need to get and use Efex
- Greg / Astro8 showed me a different way to start inside Corel PSP
- I do prefer color rendering that looks similar to some film that I've used in the past. Even with that limitation, colors can differ dramatically
- Some people like harsh counter light, some don't
- About half the participants prefer 21mm landscapes over 28
- 240 files exposed for the highlights are very mallable

Many thanks to those who voted for my split tone picture #4. Post processing is such a personal choice, where there are many good outcomes possible. I could happily live with several of the 6 versions on my wall.

This exercise has also given me respect for the M240 RAW files (my previous experience has been with Canon FF digital). Thanks for the opportunity Roland!
 
Yes, congratulations to Andreij and Lynn!...and very well deserved too.

I have to admit, the moment I saw Lynn's split tone version I knew that we were all in trouble :)
 
Thanks to Roland and everyone who participated. As someone who has a lot to learn about post-processing, it was fascinating to read the varied descriptions of how people approached the task.

As I mentioned in the original thread, I was aimed for something that looked like early slide film (this is a rather vague target, I know). Nonetheless, having such a defined objective made it a more directed process than usual for me; often my color PP is dominated by "I wonder what this will look like". I also briefly considered going for a wet plate look, but I felt it might seem too heavy-handed for some. I certainly learned a few things along the way to the final product.

It was a fun challenge, and Roland's generous prize offer (now doubly generous) was the icing on the cake. Thanks, all.
