I know this has been discussed before, but I'm having trouble finding useful information in the archives. (Maybe this should be posted to the main "Reviews" section.)
It seems like paying $35-$75 per slide scan is absurd, when one can do it oneself. Are there reasonably priced film scanners that can match an output house's quality?
I ultimately want to Inkjet print my 35mm negs.
Please Recommend a Slide/Film Scanner. Thanks.

The minolta scan multi pro will scan from 35 upt o 6x9 with a resolution of 4800 dpi. They have a less expensive version which has even higher res but will only do 35. I would go this route and this way you have full control over your scans.

Minolta Scan Elite 5400. No real competition for 35mm.

What about the Nikons? They looked pretty good to me, but so did the Minolta. What do you think makes the Minolta better? (I'm trying to decide what to buy...)

Resolution and cost. With Nikon, I can spend more, and get lower resolution. Note: the nikons are faster. If speed is your main thing, go for the Nikons. I want to be able to crop from a bigger source, or print out a 23"x35" pic (figuring 1/2 border on 24x36). You do not get that capability at 4000dpi.

So, you are basically at the point of saying do I want speed, or quality. Now, the Nikons are great, but there is a dramatic diffence in resolution. And yes, you can actually use all that resolution. I have no problem with 5400 with the following films (tested): Reala, NPS, NPH, Provia 100F, 400F, Kodak 320T. I use a Contax G1 (used mainly with 90mm and 35mm) and two EOS SLRs (lenses primarily used are 100mm F2 on Elan 7E, Tamron XR DI LD 28-75 on EOS 3).

There are know banding issues with the Nikon's. Do some research on this. Supposedly, non high res scans look flawed with banding. This may be fixed with newer version.
