I currently use my Epson 4490 to scan B&W negatives at home. I have been wanting to upgrade for some time. Here is my situation. I send my color and slides out to be developed and scanned. So, this will be used for scanning B&W film. Should I get the 8100 or just spring for the 8200i? The 8200i has extra features for scanning color and slides (IR). Will I miss this while scanning Tri-X? Help me out. Thanks.

IR dust removal will have no effect on a B/W negative, save the cash.
If you ever scan a colour neg though you will regret not having it.
Perfect answer both yes and no.

You can't use IR for BW film (silver is opaque to IR so it would not work), so if you are absolutely sure you won't scan color film, I'd say save some dollars and get the 8100.

I think I will spring for the 8200i.

After looking around I finally ordered the Pacific Image 7200u. Anybody else using it?
