Hi. I have no experience with scanners. Most of my photography is with B&W film. I have a few questions:
Is there any advantage to purchase the 7600i-AI over the 7600-SE?
Is there any problem with the 7600-SE model I should be aware of?
Does the included software work well with Lion?
Thank you in advance for any information.

Ai & SE are software differences. Scanner is the same. AI is the Silverfast full featured software, SE is the Lite Version. See:

If you are only scanning silver halide based B/W, I suggest you consider an OpticFilm 7400. It is almost identical to the 7600i SE bundle. The only difference is that the 7400 does not have IR dust and scratch removal. IR dust and scratch removal will not work on silver halide based film any way so you can save yourself a few $$ by buying the 7400.
There are some good deals going on right now at B&H.

The 7400 doesn't have hardware dust and scratch removal, which doesn't work on most B&W film anyway. However, I've read that the 7400 has slightly better optical abilities (a higher "real" resolution.)
Silverfast SE doesn't do 16/bit channel TIFFs. So if you intend to do post processing in Photoshop, Lightroom, etc, then you may want to consider Silverfast Ai to get the most out of your images.

B&H has the 7600i Ai on sale for $350. I ordered one and got it today. If you use a Mac and OSX Lion, the bundled software doesn't work, but you qualify for a free upgrade--just have to submit your purchase invoice to Silverfast on the web after registering the version that came with your scanner. Kind of a drag that I can't use it, but hopefully I can download Silverfast 8 in a few days when they send me the authorization.
Not a complete answer to your question but it might be useful.

Good info here. Does anyone know if the Pulstek can handle XPan negatives?

Not sure about the long negs. The scanner does come with a regular sized frame calibration target.
Silverfast also sent me my Silverfast Ai Studio 8 license and download link today. 1 business day response from my validation request. Can't complain about that. Their email also included uninstall instructions for Mac and PC ... the Mac instructions essentially come with a script to run to fully remove previous version. Took less than 10 seconds.
Not shabby. And now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Which calibration targets specifically? Silverfast has a couple of types: Fuji and Kodak, along with the various sizes.

It's labeled "IT8 calibration target" and carries the Lasersoft Imaging logo on the paper sleeve the slide comes in. (It's also sleeved in plastic, the outer sleeve is paper). I'm sure the documentation describes what the calibration standard/model is, but I haven't looked it up. Will post if I come across it.

for b&w and a little color (slide and negative) I'm really happy with the 7400 for $250.
