So I bought an Ikon about a month ago and I've outfitted it with a 2,0/35 Biogon and the 1,5/50 Sonnar. I now need to get a few filters but wondering how you would use a polarizer on a rangefinder. Up until the Ikon all my film or digital bodies where SLR's so I could evaluate what the effect was.

Does anybody really use a polarizer on a rangefinder at all?

You need to look trough it to see the effect and then place it in the exact same position on the lens. You're better off with an slr for polarizers.
Rangefinders are a charm with colored filters for black and white though.

There were polarizers made by Leitz that would mount on the lens and swing up exactly 180 degrees to cover the RF window. You would turn the filter until you saw the correct effect, and then swing it back in front of the lens. I have one of these fascinating kludges made by Leitz New York for the Summitar. It looks very strange, but does work. I suspect Leitz made something similar for the later lenses as well.

Cheers,
Dez

I bought the Kenko two piece polariser from Robert White UK about 4 years ago. It stays in my bag all the time....literally. I think I've taken two frames with it in total!

Well I can live with out it and plan to use mostly black and white film so I will probably have a yellow filter on it most of the time. Thanks for the replies. Live and learn.

if you have two PL filters, just put one on the camera and hold the other in your hand... rotate the hand held filter and set the on lens filter to in the same orientation. There is normally an arrow or pointer on PL filters so you can match up the angles. All you need is a swing of 180 degrees so you can always position the marker toward the top of the camera. Normal PL filters if using film / C-PL not required for film...

Works in a pinch and less expensive than the Kenko solution ( Kenko also has/had a hand held set where the hand held filter had a "holder" )
