Yeah, folks are going to dump their digital P&S's where they can shoot a million photos of the kids for nothing, and buy expensive SX-70 film. A fad in Japan? Maybe.

Pickett: The primary use for SX-70 type film most recently been the art market due to the ability to manipulate the image as development proceeds. You seem to be cynical or dismissive about a lot of things that are beyond your horizon.

SX-70 type? ISO 150? Guess I'm going to put the ND filter back in front of the electric eyes of my SX-70. I converted it for 600 film.

I used to go to Kids parties that Nikki was invited to and shoot off 4 packs of Polaroid 600. Gave away the pictures to the Kids parents. The kids loved it, gathered around and watched them develop. Digital is boring compared to Polaroid. I'd use the 35mm, use a Digital, Nikki would pose and ask "Dad, can you get the Polaroid now?"

The art market for Polaroid I would guess is relatively small, but not price sensitive. There is a reason Polaroid gave up. If the new folks can find a big enough market that doesn't care about the price, perhaps they can make a go of it.

The art market is price sensitive. Most artists who used the stuff, like me, simply cannot pay $50 a pack for film, and thats the price I saw mentioned by the Impossibles Project a while back. Forget it. Polaroid didn't give up because of lack of market though, the company was poorly managed and was bought and sold several times in recent years. Even a company whose products are in great demand will often fail in those circumstances 🙁

I sold 2 SX-70 cameras in the last year or two. Even with this announcement I don't regret it. I have accepted the death of Polaroid film, not sure I will ever go back.

They are praying for it to be a fad in Japan. The best thing that could happen to them. Can you say Hello Kitty? Anime? I bet they're figuring out how much the post-recession urban hipster will be willing to pay per pack even as we speak.

I'm with John, I wish them success. I have never had an interest in instant photography, be it straight or altered, but if there's one more company on the planet successfully producing film, I'm all for it. Just like I wouldn't touch a Holga but if those sales keep Freestyle (and 120 film) alive a little longer, so be it.

I'll even bear the return of clunky cameras clad in vinyl woodgrain for that, heaven help us.

I guess I'm a little old fashioned, but the thought of paying $5 a shot for fuzzy, oddly colored photos seems odd to me.

I've heard $50. For 10 photos. Yikes! The local Walmart here still has 600 film on the shelf for $15. Back when Polaroid still made SX70 (they discontinued SX70 several years ago) it was about $12 a pack. That was a lot, really, but I was wiling to pay it to make art. SX70 manipulations were fun! But $50 is beyond reason and my ability to pay. Hell If I were wealthy I'd refuse to pay, my midwestern stinginess would prevent me wasting money like that

and "classic" (crappy) clamshell polaroid cameras.. are going to be produced (I think, the information seems so iffy). And integral film (for the 600?)
There are plenty of these cameras already in existence; what needs to be produced is (integral) FILM. I have about 150 or so frames of 600 integral in my fridge but if I could get proper SX-70 film I'd be over the moon. I think I'll be interested in the integral black and white film...
The Fujifilm for packfilm cameras is a good product, thankfully. And not in need of an "impossible" intervention.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I read that when I went on the 'Impossible Project' site about 6-7 months ago. There is something about the Polaroid process for me. I just like it. I use Auto 100 and my Colorpack II whenever I can. I gave away a perfect SX-70 about a year ago, and I don't regret that. Right now I'm building a pinhole Polaroid. I guess I'm hooked. Pickett is right though the sharpness isn't there. Here is one recent one, Auto 100, Pack Film Fuji:

I've seen that price going over $50 before on ebay. I'm skeptical its going to get that high if/when they re release polaroid films. Even when urban outfitters was selling the last of polaroid 779 film the packs cost $24 bucks. And urban outfitters charges extortion prices already on everything. $50 dollars a pack sounds like kodachrome frenzy on June 22nd.

Helen, you are right Fuji Pack film (all three forms of it) are excellent. Let's hope they keep making it.
