Is shutter failure a common problem with Land cameras?

I went through one color pack of Fuji FP100C using my mother's old Automatic 230 with good (if slightly dark) results.

Then I loaded it up with type 667 black and white film, changed the settings on the camera accordingly (film speed = 3000) and took two photos that came out, but way too dark. After that came four more photos that because progressively darker until they are now completely black.

Has my shutter died? What is the troubleshooting process for this? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the battery was dying and completed the process. I think it uses a 531? Check it soon before it corrodes, if it hasn't already. And it was alkaline, so be careful. The stuff can burn you.

The battery is also known as a PX-19.

I agree that it sounds like the battery. IIRC, the Polaroid shutter is held open by an electromagnet until the electric eye senses enough light and cuts the power to the magnet, closing the shutter. (Ever notice how long the shutter can stay open in a low-light situation? Amazing.) The electromagnet needs the battery, of course, to work, so if the battery is dead, the shutter will only shoot at its fastest speed (I don't know what that is, though).

I too will say battery

also the exposure doesn't change at all when you change the light and dark knob

If that is the case, definitely battery or battery connections

I have had Polaroid Shutters die on me. It does happen. First check the battery voltage. If it is low, it could be the battery was bad to begin with- OR - the camera has a short that is eating batteries. Best to check the shutter without film in it. Put your finger over the Electric Eye to make sure the shutter holds open for several seconds. If it does not stay open, bad shutter.

Polaroid cameras are cheap. I know this one has sentimental value. But film is expensive, and I know at least one RFF member will send you a replacement camera for shipping.
