I think the output is very competitive. 1000 with the optical viewfinder seems fair to me.
APS-c is already smaller than I like to shoot. But it's not so bad for a p&s. small sensors and zoom are non-starters for me. they are just junk to my mind.

Even though they aren't junk in reality, my mind thinks the same way.

$500.... my top bid.
It is relatively featureless against the Olympus PEN E-PL, which has the DPreview award winning sensor of the OM-D 2012 camera of the year.
Olympus Pen
16Mp Sony, albeit 4/3 sensor
IBIS
Articulated LCD
Live View
Interchangeable lens with a very large array of lenses via Oympus and Panasonic
Zooms and fast primes
Adaptors for almost every legacy film lens in the market incl LTM, contax, etc
A sensor kicking butt on APS-c
Focal length unlimited
Aperture range (fast) lenses relatively unlimited
Selling with an excellent 14-42 lens for $699
A lens cap pancake lens available cheap for the smallest pocket size (Olympus product)
No phony addon viewfinder, unnecessary.
High res LCD
Considering many more leading features of the Olympus E-PL5 and seeing prices of $600 for the kit at some vendors, this Nikon is "johnny come late" in the mirrorless market.
Nikon's "shot to the foot" in coming last to the mirrorless table, does not give them any advantage in this market. The only thing that will accelerate them up in the rankings is a fan base that will forego features, quality and price to have "NIKON" emblasoned on the body. The street price will come down fast on this as people realize what they are buying.
$500, and I won't even wait until one shows up at that price. Feature wise it is simply not qualified to participate in a high price mirrorless market.
You got your price from me, and sorry but you also got a smarting opinion which is on the money in my book.

kuzano, do you think is fair to judge it based on a camera that is in a different category? I'm not talking about judging with your wallet... you should buy what is right for you. However, a fixed lens, large sensor compact that fits in your pocket shouldn't be compared to an interchangable m4/3 camera that doesn't (limited pancake lens aside).

Doesn't interest me....I've got a Sigma DP2-s which has a fixed 24mm F2.8 lens & a APS-C sized sensor for shooting without having my DSLR . Now if it had some other features like interchangeable lenses et all, then maybe...
