Feeling the need to extend my reach into darkness with a 50mm f1.4 I pulled the trigger on a Canon f1.4 for a good price. I have seen some mention of performance and similarities to the 50mm Summilux however there is not much out in cyberspace when it comes to head to head comparison. Can anyone weigh in on how these 2 lenses compare to each other...better of the two? Much appreciated.

I cannot compare them but did own a Canon 50mm f1.4 (black and chrome) for several years. I liked it very much and felt it to be a very "clean" and vice free f1.4 which had quite modern rendering although perhaps more low contrast than modern lenses. As with other Canon lenses of the 1950's era, from memory it did not focus all that closely - which might be a disadvantage in some situations but undoubtedly this contributed to its good image quality. I did sell it in the end, not because of any sense of dissatisfaction with it, but rather because I already had a Canon 50mm f1.8 and several f2 50mm lenses and needed money to fund the purchase of an M8 camera body. This was something of a compromise in that I was no longer shooting film all that much. If I kept the lens and declined to buy the M8, I would not use the lens as much as I should. But if I sold this lens to help buy an M8, I would shoot rangefinders much more but would no longer own the lens. Kind of a horns of a dilemma situation and I came down on the side of selling it to fund the purchase. If I owned it still I would certainly be using it quite happily.

I think you will most likely be happy with this lens which seems to have few quirks.

Take a look at my 50mm lenses comparison at RFF. Roland may still have the results on his smugmug webpage.

I don't have the Summilux so I can't do a comparison. But I can tell you that the Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM is my favourite lens. Modern rendering, but slightly lower contrast compared to modern lenses. Creamy bokeh at f/1.4, nice and sharp as you stop down.

I love this lens so much that I bought two of them! And compared to the Lux, you can afford quite a few of them 🙂

not to belittle the canon 1.4 lens which is quite fabulous...
but the canon 1.8 is a better performer. smaller
with better resolution. its the summicron of the canon ltm.

here are two examples:

left is canon 1.4 with Tri-X,

and right is the canon 1.8 with Plus-X at iso 400 in Rodinal

and lastly, i am including a canon 1.5 just for comparison. this was taken with neopan 1600 at ei of 6400.

I used to think people with more than one lens with the same focal length were out of their mind. But I've changed. Your comment is giving me a strong attack of GAS... maybe I should consider swopping one of my 1.4s for the 1.8...

I had both the Canon 50 f1.4 and the Summilux vII at the same time, prefer the Canon and sold the Lux. The Canon is a bit higher in contrast and works far better on my M8.
But, on film, the Lux was a better lens!
Andrew.

.... I have two canon 50/1.8 but do not own any 50/1.4 anymore.
Food for thought?

I had the Canon f1.4 and it is a brilliant lens I agree ... but it does have a very long focus throw.
