On my way to Salem to watch my kid do her ROTC thing and thought about checking out a camera store that still has rangefinder stuff. Any place like that? In Salem?

From my brief visit in Portland, there were two stellar camera shops that I visited. One was very proper and all employees wore bow ties and the like (Blue Moon Camera), the other being a more casual one, that I can't recall the name of. Blue Moon offered camera repair and film processing.

Pro Photo on the corner of 19th and Marshall if you can handle a store with more employees than customers. Competitive prices and all the newest and some used gear.

I'm leaving soon and planned to take my time with a stop in Biggs and Multnomah falls. Maybe the scenic route from the falls. I'll check those two stores. Looking for used accessories.

When I lived in Portland I used to go to Pro Photo. It ain't no B&H, but it had what I needed.

If you want to pick just one to look around, Blue Moon Camera and Machine in the St. Johns neighborhood is the one. The shop specalizes in film cameras and they have a great selection and a lot of stuff that is just interesting. Pro Photo if you are looking for anything digital and they tend to get some interesting used gear. Last week Pro Photo had a Japanese market, late manufacture limited edition 50mm Summicron in LTM so it may be worth a stop.

Nothing in Salem. Sadly. Nothing at all. Except....Pacific Rim Camera (they'll open doors to you, but they're primarily mail order).
There's a place in Dallas, some miles west of Salem, but will disappoint. They're called Focal Point.

In Portland, there are 2 main possibilities. You've heard them: Blue Moon and Pro Photo. Blue Moon is in a neat Portland neighborhood, but plan extra driving time to get there (surface streets).

Both have used Leica, and sometimes quite abit of it. At any given time, they price their used Leica in ways I can't understand. A mix of great deals and head-scratchers. If I could only visit one shop -- Blue Moon. I get a more positive vibe there. Not that Pro Photo is unfriendly or anything like that.

And there used to be Hollywood. I think they're still open, but kind of small. And the shop near the Lloyd that recently closed, may have opened somewhere else now. But my advice remains: Go to Blue Moon, then Pro Photo if you have time.

Visit the Ladies Room at Dinty's (if still there?)

When I was a youngster, we used to go through Biggs Junction about 2-3 times a year to visit my Grandparents. We always stopped at Dinty's Cafe in Biggs.

One time, I had been asleep in the car when we stopped there. I walked into the cafe (diner) and walked directly to the bathroom. When I came out, and everybody in the place was laughing at me. I can't remember the lady character in the Dinty cartoons, but the fellow was Jiggs, I believe. I recall the cartoon strip was Dinty Moore, and it was primarily about the character in the diner. Wonder if it's still there? That was in the late forties.

Everybody, was laughing and point behind me. I looked around and on the door was the lady character. Embarrased.. sure... But I got my business done.

Biggs is about the stretch of the Columbia where the waterfalls and pines in the Gorge have ended, and the drive East is more vast farmland and wheat fields. Oh, and chemical gas storage and nuclear dirt. I think it's one of the Super Cleanup Sites for the government.

then Pro Photo if you have time.

Just a few years ago, Pro Photo moved their film processing lab out of the main store, and built a new film processing lab. This turned a lot of space in the original store into available for retail.

The lab is just a couple of blocks away, and relatively new. In itself it is quite a presence. I visited the new lab, and I have used them mail order from time to time.

Dinty's is still in Biggs Junction....

Dinty's is still in Biggs Junction....

I checked and Dinty's Store and Deli is still in Biggs Junction. I must go there this summer and have a burger. I called and they have security cams on the doors to the rest rooms. Great!

Kuzano, back in your younger years do you remember a big restaurant where the McDonalds in now? I can't remember the name of the restaurant but it's been gone for a while. I too would go to grandma's house in Estacada and we would stop in Biggs and have lunch at that restaurant.

Anyway, never made it to Pro Photo or Blue Moon. I did take the scenic route through Multnomah Falls up to Vista House. Got close to Troutdale and traffic got ridiculous. 205 all the way to Powell St. I didn't want to deal with traffic in town.

I appreciate all the info though.
