Portra 400VC/NC is no more

What is important that Kodak will provide it also in 4x5. 400NC is(was) to my knowledge the last fast 4x5 color film.
 
As far as I can see the two different types (vc and nc) are being merged into a single type....

If it's anything like ektar but with slightly more latitude colors slightly more subtle it'll be great.

Agreed.
I adore Portra NC for weddings but it would be nice to have a bit more punchiness that one gets with VC now and then.

That said, as long as the base stays relatively the same, I'll be happy.
It's a great film for scanning !

It wouldn't surprise me if they merged the VC and NC together especially if its designed with scanning in mind, control over contrast/saturation can change with a drag of the mouse and not at the coating plant. 8x10 users might be too happy though.
 
The new portra might rock.

Does this mean something like the fourth layer in fuji pro films.
I always thought fuji print films trumped kodak in the "natural skintone" arena.

...or...

is it 400 speed Ektar?

Either way, I remain optimistic.

I suppose I simply want realistic skintone and contrasty saturation.

I think I just want Kodachrome in c-41.
 
I still have a roll of the "free Portra" when they launched the line. I should hang onto it and make some $$ on ebay at some future date. In the meantime I will keep shooting 160NC and hope the changes are good ones.
 
Title of this thread caused me some immediate panic.

But this new film looks fantastic based on what kodak specs on that page.

Bring it on. And way to go Kodak! Another new film and it's 2010!
 
Wow... it sits in the middle of the VC and NC for saturation, but has the lower contrast of the NC...

Looks really promising!

Just checked myself and I agree..
This would be an awesome film.. looks like it's got just enough punch that I would want (a la VC) while still maintaining all the other stuff I like about NC..

The good news is Kodak is not just dropping the Portra line of film, they are coming out with a replacement. Film still lives, and we have choices.
 
This makes a lot of sense to me, I too really like the idea of medium saturation and normal contrast sort of like the recently demised and beloved (at least by me) fuji 800z

In practice you have a lot of control over saturation via exposure and printing anyway, and moreover makes me wonder if there is an ektar400 in the works which would make a 400vc doubly redundant.

In today's world, makes a lot of sense. I use the 400VC for MF, but "something in the middle" of VC-NC would be fine. Yes, such headlines do inspire initial panic... :)
