The best camera is one that still works!
Can I please see some examples from the various portrait lenses (85mm to 105mm?) in Nikon F mount that will suit my FM3A and D700.
Examples in both film and digital ... thanks!

105mm f/2.5. What more would you need?
(My F3HP, 105mm f/2.5, and 50mm f/1.2, are now dedicated to my last few remaining rolls of K64)

Get both.
Start with a Single-Coated Sonnar formula 105/2.5 for portraits.
Trust me.

That's stunning Stewart ... how many variants of this lens are there and which one should I be looking for?

I will ask my mother-in-low to show her photos taken with a 2/85 Nikkor.

Nikkor-H.C 1.8/85 in AI mount (if you can find one...) or the 1.4/85.
Also Zeiss makes their 1.4/85 in F mount.
I also have the old Nikkor-P 2.5/105 in AI, but I've always felt it was too long and compressed the image too much. Looks like a tele shot to me. The 85mm looks more like a close up done with a 50, because you see more of the environment. Just looks more natural to me. I really don;t like portrait shots done with lenses longer than 85 or 90mm, unless the facial features of the individual need the compression you get from long glass. That said the 2.5/105 is one heck of a good lens...

You asked, so I'm going to give them to you...
All 5D + Nikkor 105/2.5 pre-AI wide open:
I really liked this lens, but for what I like to do, I found the aperture a little too slow. I ended up selling it in order to fund a Rokinon 85/1.4 (which is available in F mount). It's supposedly a "budget" lens (~$250 new) that is SUPERB...manual everything but very sharp and gorgeous wide open and at f/2. Like I said, the Nikkor was GREAT, but I wanted a little more speed. The Rokinon goes by multiple names, Rokinon, Samyang, Vivitar Series 1 and many more...if anyone is interested let me know and I can give more info
Here's some samples from the Rokinon:

One more vote for the 105/2.5. There is NO equal!

I had a 85/1.4 AIS (AKA "Cream Machine"), a very nice lens. Sold it because I own a 75 Lux.
Had a 105/2.5, but I sold it when I got a 105/1.8 AIS. The 105/1.8 not only has a little more speed, it also has more aperature blades. IMHO it has better/smoother OOF than the 105/2.5, but it is a big fat heavy lens.
As I remember, I believe it has ten aperature blades, while the 105/2.5 only has seven. In response to "What more could you want?" I say the answer is a 105/1.8.
I still own the 105/1.8 AIS and plan on keeping it for use with a F3P.

Well, if somebody wants to buy one, mine is -still- for sale in the classifieds.

I'd keep it if I had a Nikon film body. As things stand now I only have a d70, which I only use for product photos when I sell things and for various other quick snaps.

Truth is beauty
Keith,
I use the 105 2.5 for my manual Nikons and the 85 1.8 AF wide open for my autofocus Nikons and my digital. Both sharp and with beautiful OOF rendering. The 85 1.4 is great too, but a bit heavy and big for me.
If you don't own the 105 2.5, for sure you will love it...
Cheers,
Juan
