I have a Bessa R with the classic (not pancake) 35/2.5 Color Skopar lens. It came with the round lens hood which seems to do the job, but I'm wondering: does the square lens hood make any significant difference to anything except my bank account balance?

Since it's tax refund season (yay!) I'm also considering purchasing the 50/2.5 Color Skopar lens so the above question would apply to this lens as well.

Thanks all in advance!

Hi Doug,

I am told that under difficult lighting conditions ,the rectangular hood does control flare somewhat better, however it does block a percentage of the 35mm framelines in the viewfinder, what that percentage is, I do not know?

Regards,
kf

Both lenses have the same barrel I believe and both use 39mm filters. Another hood option is the vented Heavystar hood on ebay. They now sell for $20 with a 55mm cap that snaps onto the front of the hood. They are not as compact as the original CV hoods, but it will provide more protection to the front element, especially if you use filters.
