These two photos were taken in 1969 at the An Lac Orphanage in a Saigon suburb. Notice the little girl who is hiding her face in each photo. I was unable to capture her image on several trips there. Then, in 2010 at a reunion in Columbus, Georgia, I finally got her image:
It only took me 41 years!
I capture my images while in a zone and worry only about exposure, framing and the moment. Later, I view my images the same as anyone else and with this one it struck me how the scene shows his isolation - as is the case with many these days that are constantly immersed within their cellphones - each of us who do the same in our own isolated corners. I could have walked up to him and I’m not sure he would have noticed, so engrossed he was.
