Of course the original cassettes from Nikon were for the rangefinder series of bodies with the SLR F carrying over compatibility, sadly lost with the F2, with its own variant as above(thanks for that) and abolished with the F3.
The cassettes evolved over the years on the reminder markings, and the finish did vary as well.

From L-R:
400 max E marked (empty)
400 max but with colour speeds in red no E
as above but different font
Most modern, E mark speed up to 1600 small font, no red for colour film in speed but like previous two red dot to identify colour film.

Most on the market seem to date from the SLR F age, probably because of the sheer number of F bodies made. Early F ones were in a lovely brass finish with the old logo, I have a few but have no picture to hand, another little project.
