I've been reading the boards on and off for the past couple of years, but rather new to posting in them. Since it's ok to have something digital, I give you my favorite photo of Ginji, apparently playing his favorite Winter-time game. Peekaboo.

Watch out, darkhorse, that one has stripes on her belly. Every cat I've ever known who had a striped belly was EVIL. My grandpa had a little grey female with stripes all over her, including her belly, and she made a hobby of tearing apart dogs and killing rattlesnakes. She also killed enormous numbers of mice, rabbits, and chipmunks and left huge piles of them next to the house. Be careful not to make your cat mad; grandpa's striped-belly cat was vengeful and held grudges for weeks at a time.

We have that same toy, the one that you can re-stuff with catnip and close with velcro.

nah she has spots on her belly, and she's been a sweet cat so far. the only thing she'll get a chance to kill are flies and other bugs. the shelters really encourage keeping your cat as an indoor cat around here. i see a lot of lost cat signs around, and the vast majority are never found because of the coyotes.

I've had dozens of cats. There are two kinds of them: hard biters and purr kitties. As long as you encourage hard biters to keep their claws sharp, then they can easily survive even the most predator ridden environment. Give them a "cat door" and you will only see them at feeding time.

Purr kitties, on the other hand, should be pampered, and always kept inside. Preferably on a sitting satin pillow with their name embroidered on it. These cats are much more fun to play with, as they won't leave you bloody. But they are also much higher maintenance.

You cannot tell which is which by looking at them.
 
I think the cat is going to decide for itself whether it wants to be an indoor cat or outdoor cat. Both of our cats played rough, but we kind of egged them on. One of our cats has a need to hunt, but does come home to sleep and eat for ~12 hrs+ a day. The other cat is more amenable to staying indoors most of the time, or stay close around the neighbors and so far hasn't hunted or fought, that we know of.

An indoor cat will typically live a longer life, but may not be as happy as an outdoor cat. Within it's first couple of years, I think the cat will let you know what his ambitions are.
 
My cat is living with me in the very center of San Francisco so being outdoor cat is pretty much impossible. At least she's got OK size room, her own human size couch and bed. And the apartment building is very cat friendly (there are more cats than humans living in the building). I wish she can be more active, but I think she is fairly happy. Well, I truly hope so...
