I like them, Pali! Keep them comming! :)

One of the first thing I noticed when scanning with the Scanmate was how clouds on positive film seem to have an almost 3D like effect to them - they really pop out from the blue sky.

Kamph, you told me to keep them coming so here are a few more :) BTW, I know exactly what you mean by the "popping" clouds. Drum scans are just magic.
These were just processed from a Portra 160 roll I shot in the neighborhood today.

Thank you Kamph. My process is very simple and the key is to make sure that you scanner is calibrated properly. If you look through the maintenance thread, you'll see a post about changing the UV/IR filter that I think makes the biggest difference in getting natural negative scans. Beyond the filter, I scan in 16 BIT TIFF mode with "Default" Monitor Profile in CQ Settings and "Monitor Profile" set int the Scan Settings with the "Embed Profile" setting unchecked. What this does is scan the negative as you see it in the program and keeps all of the channels within the range. I then take the TIFF and convert it to Adobe RBG in Photoshop (16 BIT ARGB) that goes through a inversion in ColorPerfect with the correct film profile selected. This usually gives me 95% of the final result but I do often add a contrast curve and slight warmth/cool using Hue-Saturation after the straight inversion.

Last cine scanner that used 4" photomultipliers and 16bits ADC was Cintel Millenium II. So the spec is better than any existing drum scanner but resolution limited to CRT tube used as light source (pixel). Anyway brilliant idea compared to todays scanners that use just monochrome ccd cameras and multishot frame sampling (Lasegraphics Director, Xena etc) offered as retrofit to existing transport.

Hello.

I finally got my ScanMate 5000 up and running, after about a month of cleaning, tuning, and swearing. I still haven't finished tuning the colors (film profiling), but my goodness, the results are incredible. Huge shout-out to Pali, RFF, and other sources that got me here. I'm so excited!!

Here are two really tough slides that I wanted to measure the drum against my epson v800. These are not post-processed at all, and do not have film profiles assigned.

For comparison against my v800, I captured these side-by-side screenshots... all images were scanned at 3200dpi.

Order: ScanMate 5000 (straight off scanner), Epson v800 (straight off scanner), Epson v800 (post processed - quite terrible application of skills, really).
