Here are two from today from the DP1s processed with ufraw. I must say I am quite impressed.

Sure, the camera has its quirks and it is surely not for everyone, but I am starting to like it. think about it as if being stuck with ISO 100 slide film.

Unsharp masking also works very well compared to other digital cameras I have tried. Maybe I overdid it a bit in the two below.

Finally got around to investing some time and effort in attempting macro shots with the DP3M. The results speak for themselves but this is not an ideal camera for macro work. I don't know how others have found the DP3M but the focus system is very flaky indeed. Difficult to lock on - almost impossible to determine where normal mode versus macro mode begins. In the end a lot of these shots were tripod mounted and using manual focus.

I should explain that I often shoot macro at F3.2-4 - I am not attempting to capture fine detail in depth, I like to treat the object in a more artistic way (if that doesn't sound too pretentious). It is particularly relevant to this flower which is Nigella, colloquially known as 'Love In A Mist'.

Of course, the DP3M gathers tons of detail. It is entirely feasible to crop to 100% without loss of sharpness.

Anyway, I hope the results are instructive. I left a message in the best practice thread about looking for some advice about flash to use for macro work with the DP3M, if anyone can help.

Here one more in color. It was taken with a flash plus reflector. The color conversions of the DP-1s files in ufraw show a bit of a green vignetting, but I guess this is corrected for in SPP.

I think ufraw works pretty well with the x3f files from the dp1s for monochrome conversions. Color is a matter of taste, but I can imagine that some will have a problem with the green vignetting, so SPP is probably the better alternative for that.

Unfortunately the files from the merrills are quite a bit off colorwise if loaded into ufraw (based on dcraw), otherwise it is pretty fast.

On Thursday I get to do some serious stuff with my two DPMs. I'll be spending the day photographing the progress of a public art project in Brisbane and the images will be used on the artist's web site at the completion of the project which probably has another week or two to go before completion.

Once you get used to guestimating where the focus square is within the accessory finders on the DPMs they are quite fast to work with ... similar to the X100 I had briefly IMO. It should be fun! 🙂

No DSLR ... Adrian, the artist in question, has requested the 'foveon look' and nothing else will do! 😀

The only other thing I would have quite liked is the perspective of a DP1M ... it's a big instalation and getting it all in would be easy with the 28mm field of view.

If the wide stuff can be shot in a static situation, u could stitch multiple frames together, so long as there is no movement in the frame like someone walking across.

There will be people everywhere ... it's in the middle of a high end retail development and the place is currently crawling with shop fitters and landscapers! 😛

I have to say, the DP3M has become one of my favourite cameras ... since I put the little flipbac grip on it along with the CV finder it's hard to imagine anything better in the 75mm focal length for it's size. The thing is just awsome! 🙂

I am actually thinking that down the line I may consider seeing if anyone wants to swap a DP1M for my DP2M. I'm reluctant to carry three of the things around and feel that because the files have so much detail cropping the output of the DP1M occasionlly wouldn't be problem.

Or I suppose I could just buy a DP1M and select the two cameras I need on any given occasion. That seems a little excessive though! 🙂
