Something I always enjoy is documenting closures. Perhaps it's my desire to capture and immortalize time, because when I learn that a shop is closing, I automatically want to capture it before it is gone. Over time, I've documented numerous closures including Borders books, Masters hardware, and whatever small shops that come and go.

Magic Kitchens was in business for over 50 years, but was forced to close when the owner and primary cabinet maker unexpectedly passed away. This image was taken through the shop window in the last days of operation. The showroom used to be filled with display kitchens and furniture, then reduced to just this over the course of a few months.

We know the story of Borders, and the collapse of the Borders chain meant that stores all over Australia (and America) were discounting stock and selling shop fittings. It was not uncommon to see someone loading Borders bookshelves into a trailer or wheeling them out of the front.

Masters hardware was launched in Australia in 2009 with the intention of challenging homegrown giant Bunnings. Supermarket chain Woolworths partnered with American chain Lowes to build at least 150 stores. They built a chain of giant warehouse style stores, which eventually fell to the administrator's hammer. I have dozens of images of the Masters closure which I've never got around to posting.

For sure you have an interesting body of work. Sad but worthwhile to document. Well done

Jimbaran Bay, Bali.

Rather than do the obvious - in this case make a color image - I instead wanted this photo to emphasize the tonal values and textures in the sea and the sky. I also chose not to zoom in when taking the shot, so as to emphasize the vastness of the ocean and sky and the loneliness of this small vessel. I was pleased with the result.

I read here one weekend morning a quote from Hokusai which had me hunting in the afternoon for such a lesson from nature, and here in the quiet gardens near home was life and movement in a graphic form. Santolinas moving in a still image. Here is the quote posted years ago by Lukaitis on RFF. It’s from volume one of One Hundred Views of Mt Fuji. He wrote this down when he was 75:

“...until the age of 70, nothing I drew was worthy of notice. At 73 years I was somewhat able to fathom the growth of plants and trees, and the structure of birds, animals, insects and fish. Thus when I reach 80 years, I hope to have made increasing progress, and at 90 to see further into the underlying principles of things, so that at 100 years I will have achieved a divine state in my art, and at 110, every dot and every stroke will be as though alive. Those of you who live long enough, bear witness that these words of mine are not false.”

Just stepped out to test the new, old Nikon D100, yeah kinda like it and these turned out ok for me, I like the simplicity of them, as a test, just needs some fine tuning methinks, this is with Auto WB as well as a first run, the B&W tests are just the colour removed.

(These are auto jpegs from Raw files - Nikon 18-70mm f3.5/4.5 AF-S)

Nice shots. Nikon really got great results out of those 6MP sensors.
