Pouch for a TLR?

I just got a minolta Autocord that has not ready case (I do not really need one) But for the time when the camera is inside my (not padded) bag I would like to put it inside some kind of push (neoprene could work) that would give it some protection against the other elements inside.

The point is - I have not seen any pouch (apart from those pricey leather pouches one can see on ebay that do not even look too practical) that would fit the shape of the camera. The lens pouches are round (for obvious reasons) and once the diameter is large enough they get too long and bulky.

I would really like to find something that would follow the brick-shape of the camera (maybe with the lens hood on) - so it would not get unnecessarily too bulky. It does not even have to be fast as I carry the camera over my shoulder when I plan to shoot.

Any ideas? Or skilled hands to make one? I guess it takes some tools and experience to sew material like neoprene and get decent results.

i use a domke insert that works pretty well. domke inserts have light padding so they don't take up too much space, but still provide protection.

The Autocord is 114cm high, 7.5cm wide, 10cm deep (5.5″x3″x4″) so should fit. The have a Medium and a Large.

The advantage I have found to a small camera bag that holds just the autocord and some film is that I can decide to carry the case on its own strap outside of my knapsack. Or I can throw the whole bag into the knapsack. If I pick up some food while out and need some room in the knapsack, out comes the camera bag. and in goes the food. If I am not certain I want to be shooting, I can have the camera bag out but not the camera in hand. Or camera in hand, bag in knapsack, etc. All in all small camera bags don't take up much more room than a pouch. They tend to be more structured, and many seem designed to hold a TLR. A small Tamrac bag I have hols a Rolleicord or Autocord with lens hood attached, snug.

I use an insulated lunch bag (conference schwag) that just fits around the body. It has just enough padding/form, and I can fold it and stuff it in my back pocket while wandering around. It doesn't add much bulk when I throw it and the TLR in a back pack.

I use a crumpler haven for my flexaret, it works great; I think getting one of these sorts of pouches is much better than getting a dedicated camera bag because it gives you the flexibility to use whatever bags you already have.

That's what I've done, too. I have a LowePro bag called the EX140 and it holds my camera (Rollei, Leica whatever) and it goes right in the backpack. and gives me all the choices you mentioned. Works great!

Sorry for a late reply - thanks for your suggestions - some really interesting ideas popped.

Going for a pouch, than the one from Zing looks good. If I would judge purely on the size (which is mentioned only in 2 dimensions I would midst - but the photo with a Hasselblad inside tells that a TLR would fit too.

I was browsing a bit more too and found something size-wise close to a pouch, but it is actually a separate small bag - namely the Skin 50 V2.0 from Think Tank. The depth of 10 cm fits exactly, the with of 14 allows to use a (included) divider to stuff couple of rolls of film, the height allows to put a small light meter on top (Digisix in my case) and the front pocket can be used for a small Moleskine and a pen. And I can even buy it in Germany for still reasonable 25€. I may give it a try.

Just for completeness - in the past I have used a case from Photobackpacker - the one that was meant to stack 2 large format lenses (on 4x4" lens boards) on top of each other - a TLR fits in perfectly - even (tighter fit) with a lens hood on. Great for transit in a larger bag or suitcase.

I have the Zing bag for a Rolleiflex F, it is tall enough I keep my spare film at the bottom and I have a cut out rectangle from the mantle of one of those insulated ( neoprene again) beer can coolers that float around the boat ... on top of two rolls of film and below the Rollei.

Fits perfectly well, even with the hood on. I was amazed; the bag also travels well with camera inside as it cushions so well.
