Recently there have been a wave of Powerbook G4's developing Vertical Lines or dead pixels that run the full length of the screen. It usually starts after about 15 months of use, with just one line, then develops into more. I saw one photo of a screen that had over 20 lines! This is a manufacturing defect that until now, Apple has chosen to ignore, despite the overwhelming number of users who are experiencing this problem. If you wanted to fix this problem yourself, it will cost you $1000 to have the screen replaced. This is unacceptable for a 15 month computer from Apple's top of the line at the time.

99% of the affected Powerbooks are the G4 17" 1.67 M9689 models, assembled in China. The serial number for the model affected starts with: W85XXXXXXXX.

If you experience the same problem, you should make your voice heard by contacting your Apple Service Center, then contacting Apple Customer Reps directly.

Check out this website and include yourself in the database:

I know that if others come out and voice their opinions, Apple will do the right thing and order a recall for all affected units!
