Pre-ordered X100, Selling 5D2. How crazy am I?

You asked - yes, you are totally crazy. I would never give up the awesome IQ of the 5D and its lens inter changeability. You just traded one of the best cameras for a P&S fixed lens non-proven novelty.
 
I guess I have this feeling like, if i want great image quality, my Toyo 45A is right there, wondering when I'm going to open her up to the world again. Plus my Bessa's are 'full frame,' and so is my Olympus Stylus Epic. 🙂

Also to be perfectly honest, I've never thought the image quality out of the Canon was that great. The files are huge, with not a lot of headroom for over or under exposure. It's capable of great sharpness and detail, but I always get the impression that it's no more capable than my 12mp D700 was. It's easier to make a fantastic 13x19 (my max print size) at 300dpi, but then again a 13x19 from the D700 isn't exactly a stretch. It's probably the most well rounded digital camera available today, but for someone who is rarely shooting professionally (me), it's too much. Oh by the way. For those that don't know I work at B&H photo, which is like a crack addict working in a crack store. That might also shed some light on my rash gear shifting.

There, I've talked myself into it. I seem to be able to talk myself into anything! 🙂

Thanks for the thoughts and wisdom folks. I got in on the B&H pre order so I'm supposed to be receiving one soon, there were shipments that got out. I'll be posting all my X100 thoughts and reviews here on RFF and my flickr. We'll see if I end up kicking myself... I've made mistakes in the past.

One last thought. I'm traveling to Costa Rica in a few months and I was thinking about what cameras to bring. Never for a minute did I consider bringing my Canon. It's too bulky, and I would worry about it being stolen, or damaged, since it's so expensive. That alone was frustrating to think about, which is another reason I'm ok with ditching the 5diesel Mark II.
 
If you really make that exchange, I'll have to assume that you sort of bought the DSLR on a whim and that you really didn't need it to begin with.
Because there is no way that any fixed lens camera is going to replace the versatility of what you already own.
The question is probably whether or not you were crazy to buy the Canon in the first place...🙂
 
I went again to look at a sample of the X100 (one of the few good things about living in Japan at the moment) and I was impressed. Along with the camera were a book of B4 sized prints, all of which were excellent.

I too have become tired of heavy/noisy DSLR cameras. It is nice to have a quality, compact camera which has a low profile and nearly silent operation (like a Leica), and which costs only as much as a good-quality DSLR lens. In fact, the X100 is smaller and lighter than my 24-70/2.8 Nikkor VR lens...

If he'll use / carry the X100 more than the 5d, then it makes sense. People who come to RFF generally prefer rangefinders / rangefinder like cameras. Lens interchangeability is overrated for some. There is many different ways to photograph.

Also, how is the Fuji only a P&S when it is a fully manual camera? Novelty...why? Does a fixed lens now make a camera a point and shoot?
 
If you want to buy the Fuji I say buy it. I would not however be selling world class camera gear to fund it though.

I honestly do not get the rampant buying and selling found on photo forums.

I know it sounds crazy that I'm replacing my 5D2 with an X100 but it seems like I'll get the same enjoyment out of the X100 that I get from my Bessa's. An enjoyment that I never got from my Canon.

You are not the least bit crazy.

Since you never really enjoyed the 5D2, getting rid of it in order to have a camera you will enjoy makes sense to me. How is that crazy?

Your decision does not not reflect poorly on the 5D2 at all. While the 5D2 must be wonderful for some people, who says it has to be wonderful for you?

And yes, the D7000 would be an cost effective way to bring the flexibility of a DSLR system into your work.

Well, you switched from a perfectly good D700 to 5DII, can't be crazier than that. 😀

I much prefer Nikon also, if it were not for my wife doing high-school portraits and events (with her 5D Mark II), I would have bought a D700 long ago.

But, I don't blame you at all for preferring the X100. Small, compact, and high quality is good. I got that from my Oly E-P2.
 
I hate, hate those black computers they call "canon eos cameras"....I love to see my aperture ring, my shutter dial and silver cameras and lenses. I could kill for that.

EOS is like a bad plague....i could keep going on, but that's enough for the moment. :angel:
 
When I change all my canon eos equipment for leica M I felt in heaven. It is one of those thin I never regret or look back. Something similar like when I change from PC to MAC.

Maybe the quality of the x100 is no comparable to the 5d, but i do care a lot about the "driving" of the camera, the joy of having fun with it. I would say the eos is like driving any automatic car, and leica will be like the fun of driving an mechanical beautiful race car.
 
Haha. There is no way I would sell my 5dii for the x100, but thats just me. The 5d and 35L combination would not be able to compare to the x100 in my opinion.
If the x100 had an M mount I would consider selling my M8.
I say keep em both!
 
As usual, its horses for courses. If your needs are more in keeping with a smaller 'carry everywhere camera' then clearly the ditching the 5D II and getting the X100 is a smart move.
 
You are nuts , LOL , actually if you just want the one lens deal why nut. Me I am aworking pro with 7 digital cameras and 3 film cameras. What ever makes you happy.
 
I wouldn't sell the 5d I've got a couple that I use for work and I don't think you can get better but thats me, its your money no need to justify it if that's what you want to do buy it and enjoy it!
