Cliche or not, my favorite place is Venice - but in the off season. When the crowds are gone you can wander, uninterrupted, in one of the most photogenic places in the world. Food is pretty good too.

I sometimes grab an atlas to map out how I can make a circular trip hitting all the spots I want to see, and visiting relatives along the way. But it never happens. Before it was because I had a full time job, now I just can't afford to.
But when I do have to travel, whether it is back home for a visit, or to special group gatherings, I always try to carve out some time for photography.
My two favorite plans were to do the East Coast from south to north, and a tour of the National Parks out west. Now I'm lucky enough to get a hundred miles away from the abode.

Hopefully Rocky Mountain National Park this summer. Who knows, on a hike there I might even bump into John Van Stelten now that he is retired. Joe

am curious about this. is there really an off season in Venice? top destinations tend to have one season only, and its on season.

For our 40th anniversary, my wife and I took a river boat cruise with Viking, October 2017. It was almost 2 weeks long. We started out in Prague and ended in Paris. Lots of photo ops. Most folks our age but the exception were two couples on their honeymoon. Less than 200 on the boat.
We spent time at the memorial where the Battle of the Bulge took place as my Uncle Wayne fought in the battle. He is one of just a few who escaped from a German P.O.W. camp and made it back to the American side.
At any rate, river boat cruising is wonderful for any shutter bug!

Both professionally & for holidays, the mountains are my attraction. As a by product, I do travel through some big cities...& enjoy the difference, but tend not to print a lot of those. I have enjoyed street shooting in Paris, Austin & Santa Fe.....among my favourites.
