Premium Arista 400 vs Tri-X

I myself order 30 rolls a few weeks back. Got the film and am just waiting for my latest project to start up and i'll be using it.

Well mine arrived the other day. I haven't had a chance to shoot any of it yet (still finishing off my actual tri-x stockpile), but from looking at the film leaders, they appear to be a slightly different base... although this is a comparison between refridgerated tri-x and room temperature arista. Will see if the tri-x looks different when it warms up. That said, the arista comes in the same plastic containers as Kodak films do, don't know if that narrows it down or not though. To be honest, I don't mind either way. I'm planning to learn how to make the arista work for me in rodinal.

I like this Tri-rista.:p

Ive been shooting it for a few weeks now and for all intents and purposes, for me it does exactly the same thing as Tri-X. I wont say it is Tri-X because I dont know for sure and I dont want to confuse. Some of my findings:

Would love to try some but right now finances won't allow for the Freestyle $25 minimun order plus shipping. Anyone willing to sell a couple rolls?

The Arista II came in the same containers as Agfa APX, so you can almost be assured it's being made by Kodak. Who knows if the process is identical. They obviously change up the production line to flash 'Arista' on the edge of the film.

Keep an eye on the website www.ultrafineonline.com

I have ordered film from them in the past and I think they are less well known that Freestyle, but also have sold Kodak and Ilford in generic form in the past. Their prices are usually slightly higher than Freestyle, but I've had nothing but good service from them. Sometimes I jump on bulk deals they offer on expired film.

I wrote to them and asked about 120 and sheets.

I said: << I just received your new catalog and I see on page 17 there is a new "Made in the USA" Arista premium 100 and 400 in 135 size. Do you plan to release this in 120 or any sheet film, too? Or will the market response
determine that.>>

They said: <Hi Michael

Thanks for your e-mail. You pretty much answered your own question with
your market response comment. If the response is good to the 35mm, then
we can (and will) ask the manufacturer for more sizes, including 120 and
sheet films.>

So, if we buy the 35mm stuff, they'll expand.

Okay you street photogs! Shoot lots of 35mm Arista Premium so we more stately and artistic large and medium format types can get a shot at it!

I have some of the Arista premium 400 coming and am interested in developers that people like with this film.

I would like some times, is everyone using Tri-x times to begin with?

I use T-max developer some, what times are suggested?

i ordered 25 rolls of AP since I'd been having problems finding Neopan 400 and so far I like it, though not quite as much as NP. I develop mine in Thornton's two-bath formula (high accutance, no messing with temperature control and automatic contrast control for scanning purposes) and it looks good ... have several shots with it up on RFF gallery and flickr too now.

OK, So I was in LA a couple of days ago and of course had to stop off at the freestyle candy store. What a selection I did not know where to start. Anyway, I asked for the Arista 400 and 100 and with a smile on my face said is this like tri-x and plus-x and the lady replied with an even bigger smile " yes it is like tri-x and plus-x in fact it is VERY like them" So I said I will take 20 of each. At the checkout with another lady I brough up the subject again and she said also with a smile on her face " Well there is only one company that makes film in the US" I now have no doubt that this is what it is...I am not sure what it means for Kodak to rebrand in the long term, but certainly in the shortterm it is good for the pocket.

I was right about to order a few 100ft rolls of Arista EDU ultra from freestyle when they first released the Arista Premium films. From the looks of it, Kodak is getting more money from me than Foma now. If Kodak had'nt released these films I would have kept on buying Foma's rebadged films.

This is actually very good for Kodak, as I just bought 20 rolls although I still have tri-x in the fridge. Problem is, I just tried T-MAX 400 in DDX and I just can't help thinking I need to take a break from Tri-X

I'm no scientist, but it's very TXlike. I developed it in Ktol (generic Xtol) for TX specifications and density is right on.

i haven't looked at my 400 arista vs tri-x boxes yet, but i noticed something weird today while loading some arista premium 100 and some plus-x 125 for a wedding.

the arista premium 100 expires 05/2010 and has a lot number of 0501 and the plus-x expires 12/2010 with a lot number of 0521.

is this a coincidence or is it pretty conclusive evidence of this being kodak film?
