pretty cool iPhone app to measure shutter speeds

I found this app while searching for a quick and dirty method to measure my Rolleflex shutter speeds. YMMV, but it seems pretty accurate (at least if you're not shooting slides) and very easy to use. Note: the author mentions that the app works best for leaf shutters, based on my testing with Leicas this is true. The ambient noise from a Leica makes measuring shutter accuracy a bit more problematic.

I have this app. works well for most speeds under 1/500. anything that or higher and it just isn't accurate enough

As mentioned before, it uses the phone's mic to capture a waveform of the shutter opening/closing. You then set two markers at the "peaks" to take a measurement. It was quite accurate on the Rolleiflex.

My M4 was a bit fussier, the shutter opening waveform has a few peaks rather than just one. If you pick the "right" peak (and I'm not sure I was) then it's accurate.

If you're someone who buys a lot of cameras (that fit the right profile), then the app could be very useful and might save you a few rolls of film.
