Hi all I was wondering if there is any kind of a price database for equipment. I was wondering what I could expect to pay as a reasonable price for an S2 and 5cm 1.4 lens to go with it.

Thank you for your time and I hope I am not asking a question that has been asked many a time. I did a search and it did not yield anything.

Chris

sure,

it's a variable price guide called Ebay.
prices change from day to day depending upon who is buying that week.

There's a good price guide here for the Nikon rangefinder lenses.

See rough guide below for the bodies. Prices vary a LOT depending on the condition, and who's buying on a particular day ;)

Nikon One - extremely expensive collector camera (leave it to the collectors)
Nikon M - very expensive collector camera (leave it to the collectors)
Nikon S - $200 to $600 with 5cm lens in working order (not very user friendly)
Nikon S2 - $400 to $700 with 5cm lens in working order (chrome dial), $600 to $900 with 5cm lens in working order (later black dial)
Nikon SP - $1200 to $2500 or more with 5cm lens in working order
Nikon S3 - $700 to $1,100 with 5cm lens in working order
Nikon S4 - $700 to $1,100 or more with 5cm lens in working order
Nikon S3 2000 kit - $1,800 - $2,200 (chrome) $2,100 - $2,500 (black)
Nikon SP 2005 kit - $4,000 - $5,000 or more

thank you for the very helpful post. I have seen a fair amount of fluctuation on ebay and wasn't sure what I should truly look for.

When looking prices in eBay, get sure you look at the final auction prices. Go to 'advanced search' and tick on 'completed listings'.

Great pricelist you gave us, Jon. In your list, how much do you value the 5cm lens? That is, how much should I take off to get to an S2 body only, SP body only etc. price? I think I'm about set up lens wise, but could use another body to complement my "not-very-user-friendly-but-still-terrific" S.

Thanks

Jan

Thanks Jan :)

I'm hoping Nikon Kiu (the Ebay price master!) or others can give us some more input (hint hint ).

Regarding the price of 5cm lenses, my experience watching prices here in Japan is that a combined lens plus camera kit usually sells for about $100 to $150 less than if the same camera and lens are sold separately. For example I've seen nice 5cm f1.4's sell for $300 - $350, but when the same nice 5cm f1.4 is added to a camera body it probably only adds $200 to $250 to the price. In other words the price difference of a body with a lens / without a lens is about $100 to $150 less than the cost of the lens on its own. Does this long winded explanation make sense?

Thanks all for the help with the pricing. To be honest while I wait for the right time to buy an S2 I might go and buy a Canonet QL17 due to the price of them. It shocked me to see that they go for only $20-$60 on ebay. I cannot just outright buy an S2 probably for another week while I wait for another paycheck to be comfortable with the purchase. Being in college I don't want to spend all my money at once and then starve for two weeks ;)

Thank you, Jon. Yes, that makes sense, I've seen the same thing happen with Nikon SLR equipment, where lens and body sold together fetch a slightly lower price than if sold separately. That would be another option by the way, I could look for an S2 with lens and then sell off the lens if it duplicates what I already have. Hmmm... :)

Thanks for the link, Kiu. It's up for sale again, but unfortunately this seller only sells to US residents. As I've mentionned in a previous post, Nikon RF equipment is quite difficult to find in Europe and almost non-existent in Spain, where I currently live. If it can be found, it is usually way overpriced and in doubtful condition. The US seems to have plenty for sale, but I rarely find something from Japan on Ebay. Or should I look somewhere else?

Regards

Jan
