Canon LTM Prices on Canon 50mm f0.95 getting stratospheric

wow, lot of money for the lens, even allowing $400 or so for the conversion, done by one of the best in the business.

I think that I will keep mine the way it is, in original mount.
 
When you consider you can have the 50mm 1.2 Canon for three or four hundred dollars this is a joke. I tend to see the recent price increase of the Noctilux as being responsible also!
 
One day I'll finally have the cash to consider one for my Canon 7 and all the poor things will have been modified. Though I guess after you buy one of these, a new Bessa is chump change.

Someday 75% of these lenses will be HACKED UP and modded out for Leica M mount, very very sad when the Canon 7,7s and 7sz can do such a wonderful job shooting with them

The conversions are all horribly done (regradless of who`s doing them) and the value of the lens and it`s originality in my opinion is lost forever

I do personally KNOW someone who can modify them so that nothing is damaged or cut up and the lens can be taken back and used in the original Canon 7 mount, thus saving the value of the lens in the long run - this person will be offering this service soon, maybe some lenses will be saved afterall and the conversion price is half of what anyone else is asking

I want one personally and will pay the CANON price for it, over $700 for the lense is just plain stupid, for one without the original caps and hood all in the Canon 7 mount (and less than 10 months ago you could buy them for less than $500!)

People underestimate the quality of what a perfectly adjusted Canon 7 series body can do together with this lens, it`s what the lens was designed for in the first place -

I say the M8 owners should just stay with their Noctilux`s, (if you can afford a M8 you can also afford a Noctilux) and it`s less hassle and works better with your camera anyway....leave the f0.95`s to the REAL FILM Canon 7 guys!

Prices on these will drop again....just like the Canon f1.2 and the f1.4 prices did, there was a rush for those lenses too about 6/7 months ago and prices went up......now they are more stablized, with good examples of both to be found under $400

They made quite a few f0.95`s more than people think, lot`s of them are out there all but hidden away and still boxed up or unused - it was`nt as popular a lens as one thinks when it first came out....all the huff about it`s just started in the past year or so

I can confirm Tom's points - the lens can be converted to M without destroying the possibility of converting it back to Canon bayonet mount. However, you can not avoid trimming the rear lens shroud tabs - they will foul on an M. So you can maintain the usability on an 7/7s, but its collectibility will suffer - collectors should find a good lens and 7s and hang on to them.😀

If you do want to convert one - find one that works perfectly on the 7/7s, it will work fine on an M8 by just adding the LTM adapter. Please don't believe that an unmolested 0,95 will need "modification" to work - the external bayonet holds the lens in the same plane as any other LTM lens fitted to a 7/7s and the LTM adapter will do the same on an M.

The trouble comes when you put it on an M8 and take your first shots and find that focus will be off - the camera RF needs tweaking, the lens doesn't need GRINDING! :bang: I believe this is due to the closer tolerances the Canon was built to, with respect to the Leica lenses 😉 :angel:

I have had to adjust the RF on my M8 to work with the 0,95 and a 90 Summicron. It is easy to do, just a little painstaking. There is a happy medium where both work great. I would not want to try accommodating both a 0,95 and Noctilux, however! The DOF is quite small with both the 0,95 and the SLOW Nocti 😛

BTW, I have Tom's conversion resource to thanks for some great advice to get me started - he knows what he's doing and doesn't take the ham-fisted approach some do.

Unsure how an LTM adapter would work with a Canon 50/0.95, given that the lens is bayonet mount, and does not have a standard 39mm thread mount. Assume you mean that the LTM adapter would be mechanically attached to lens using screws, or something

Prices of the M8 have fallen. Just helped my friend get a new one with a choice of any Summarit for $5k. If you sell the lens and the filters, the camera bought new is actually cheaper than even the used ones I see being sold here.
 
Today I browsed through some ebay offers and the catalogs of Pacificrim, Kevincamera,KEH and some more.

My conclusion: they all go bananas. Even for crappy equipment prices are exorbitant, feels like Nikon SPirit.

Look at the good old "Canon Rangefinder Lens Price & Info Guide" and compare real prices - in the meanwhile many good, popular Leitz lenses are cheaper than some of the better Canon RF lenses :bang:

Is someone interested in a 2/35, user grade, with a f*****-up 40mm skylight filter? I am willing to sell this and get a 2/35 Cron instead, because I want to save some money... I' sell my black minty 3.5/135 and the Cron will be an "asph" because it comes with a 48mm UV filter... because the production runs of just a few 100,000 lenses make them as rare as Zunows 😀

Okay, I stop complaining... if you tell me where I can buy Canon RF gear at reasonable prices.

Canons show up at reasonable prices here, every now and then. But one normally has to be here at the right time, and move fast, because they find new homes quickly. Kevincameras is overpriced on most items, and is not a good reference, IMO. Nothing against the guy- a number of folks on RFF have said that he is a good guy to deal with, and very honest about grading gear that he sells.

Someone needs to HELP me out here........I still want to find a decent f0.95 lens with a front cap, I`m really ready to start using one of these on my 7s, no one`s using a f0.95 in the Retro PinUp field and it`s been long overdue, a "user" grade one with an intact canon 7 mount and a front cap - or a complete Canon 7sz set up for a fair and decent MARKET PRICE (NOT COLLECTORS PRICE) this lens with a clean 7sz SHOULD be in the $1,250 range that`s a reasonable market price - I will sell my Canon 7s as well to "upgrade" to a 7sz and this lens, it`s still the BEST combo for this lens set

Tom - with all due respect, just because you feel these lenses are over priced, that doesnt influence the market - its all about supply and demand. And these are in high demand and most of the people buying them have the financial means to pay big bucks. Also the falling dollar means people from other parts of the world can afford to pay more for these lenses from US sources..

Heck, I think the M8 is way over priced, but it really doesnt matter - the market dictates.

PS - Remember when Diana cameras were selling for $ 100 to $ 200 just a few years ago ? Talk about huge demand over paying for something in high supply !!

Just like the prices of the Canon f1.2 were really high like 6 months ago (as high as $700) and now they have come down again......so will the f0.95

I`m sure I will still find a lens for $500 to $700 range in the original Canon 7 form, they made more than 12,000+ of these lenses, they are uncommon, but not really rare if you think about it - just grossly overpriced - I think a private sale will be the best route, over the net it`s just too crazy, I`ve found much rarer lenses then these privately for half of what the current "collectors" prices online are....

I think this opinion is being proven wrong now, with unmolested 0.95 examples showing that the lens can produce images on par with most Noctilux characteristics, exceed it some (vignetting), and trail it some (coma, MAYBE sharpness, but most Nocti shots seen are not critically sharp).

There has been a certain mythology developed that the lens is horrible wide open, which seems to be propagated by people who have never used it or didn't take care to learn to use (or focus) it properly.

Sure compare it to a good 1.4 and WO it is not as sharp - but the same can be said for the Noctilux - at $4500 to almost $6000 (I had to think twice after stating that - wow). Even at the current prices of 800-1200 for a good Canon mount version, it works out to a steal compared to the competition.

The lens is sometimes tough to use - but far from a gimmick...
