Sounds like you never shot trannys?
I had no idea what he was talking about. IMHO, "tranny" is a term short for
transmission, as in automobile transmission. Hence, I was very confused.
I've shot slide film for about 40 years and have never heard slides referred to as "trannys". Maybe I was living in the dark ages?

Two nations, divided by a common language (Wilde). In English, a gearbox is the thing between the engine and the wheels. But then, consider the bit under the engine that holds the oil. In English: 'sump'. In American: 'oil pan'. In Indian English: 'chamber'. What do our Antipodean chums call it?
Cheers,

Transistor Radio - but I thought we spelled it "Trannie".

Oh, you mean the "sump". Thought we were still on "tranny". Sorry!

Considering the fact that I live in San Francisco, I may get a chance to shoot some trannys of trannies...
Thanks for the explanation, I will add it to my dictionary

Yes, that one existed in the UK too, usually with the spelling you quote. Transparencies might be abbreviated either to trannie or tranny.
Of course, with any abbreviation, it is of most use for things you encounter most often, so I've used it 99.99999% of the time for slides, 0.00001% for radios, and never for transvestite or gearbox.
And thanks for clarifying the usage of 'sump'.

Yeah, tranny does mean automotive transmission as well, but the use of the word for transparency is one I have only ever heard here. When used in a paraphilic context, I thought it meant transsexual, or transgendered, but I suppose transvestite is not that far off. I do think that term is out of date though. Now-a-days we say "cross dresser".

Of course, context is all. If I say I was 'shooting trannies' you may fairly guess that I was not putting holes in portable wirelesses or people of unusual sexual orientation, and 'listening to a trannie' would most likely imply a radio, though I suppose that after an excess of opiated Afghan black there are people who might stare for some hours at a small square of coloured plastic to see is if was going to say anything.
