I would only want to print up to 8 x 10 max until I get into it
stuff for "handing around"
Mainly colour but also B & W
I would ready appreciate your comments on a couple of printers, (maybe the Epson or HP), and also ink costs

Pay attention to the paper as well....
The market is loaded with small printers that create very nice prints. The HP photosmart printers are superb, Epson has a couple of new models out that are fantastic. Canon is creating some excellent images. I know that doesn't help, but it is important that you know that each of these manufacturers formulate their inks AND their papers to work best in tandem. The absorption rates, dye formula and a number of factors create a system that works best if you buy all the right pieces. So, when costing out the finished product, relative to quality, my gut says that HP Inks, combined with HP papers are going to be priced high. My epson R2200 pigment ink (larger format) printer has ink cartridges that are 1/3 the price of the cartridges for the HP pigment ink 9180. Hence the HP printer ink is 3 times the cartridge price for a cartridge that only has 25% more ink. And the HP is very picky on paper. I had one, which I sold to buy a used R2200. I made this switch primarily due to production costs, and the R2200 for all appearances gives me the same quality as the much more expensive HP 13X19 printer.
My friend with a new small HP (cartridges thimble size) is wading through cartridges and has already replace on bad printer at two weeks and counting.
Another Canon user is now on a second canon ... first a ip5000 and now an ip6700 and very happy with both. The Canon is a bit more forgiving on non proprietary paper, but the ink costs fall between the HP and Epson inks.
I'm prone to Epsons, but others may have differing views.

I was/am exactly in your situation, and after a lot of reading and advice from members here wound up getting a Canon pixma 6700. It will print up to A4 and 8 1/2 x 11. I received the printer for Christmas, so it's still new and I'm still learning its ways, including experimenting w/ different papers. I've been very pleased so far w/ the results, and pleasantly surprised at how easy the software that came w/ it is to use. Definitely worth a look, IMO. At some point, though, I expect to move up to a printer that will produce larger prints (one of the Epsons, or a Pixma Pro 9000).
