Hello,

I am looking into printing at home from computer. Image quality at approximately 4 x 6 is the main criteria. I have heard good things about Hi Touch dye subs, or Epson Picture Mate. Does anyone prefer others such as Canon inkjet or dye sub, Olympus, others? Thanks for your input.

As a second option, it may be cheaper to get 4X6s done at a photo kiosk. You would still have control over what the image looks like by post processing it yourself before taking it to be printed.

Well not always. I had several 'post processed' images on a CD printed at Sam's Club recently and all were extremely color shifted even though I had prepared them using the Fuji color profile for their machine. I know they can be redone by the lab but for a few prints you can't beat doing them on your own printer.

I'v had a Canon i850 for a couple of years. it's only 4 colour & I even refill the ink tanks using a kit purchased at Costco.

It does a good job on 4 X 6 prints and the occasional 5 X 7 or 8 X 10.

I use the Picasa 2 software which is free and an quite happy.

Hope this helps, & good luck.

Regards,

Bill K.

If you want to do prints at home then I can recommend the HP 7960. I use it and have had great results up tp 8X10 as it won't really print larger. It will do super B&W prints with no special programs or inks needed other than that supplied with the printer. For a review see here http://www.photo-i.co.uk/ . I can't say enough good things about this printer.

I highly recommend Epson printers. If you have money for it, I would get R800, as it uses archival inks good for over 100 years if printed on archival paper. I have R200 (same printer as R300, just less features) and love it. I use it for colour printing and use Epson C86 with MIS B&W inks for black and white printing.

These recommendations are based on the assumption that you don't want to spend $1000 + on a printer, but if you do, I would go for one of the new Epsons that use K3 archival inks.
